Carbon Buildup in Pipe

Just purchased first 2 stroke bout 3 weeks ago and then bought another used one last week, 94 YZ 250, currently waiting on parts to do topend rebuild. It has an FMF Gold series pipe that has carbon deposits on the inside of pipe that are probably 1/8-1/16" thick. I know this cuts down on flow greatly. What is the best method for getting this carbon build up out of the pipe?

I took mine to a radiator shop and they put it in a tank for 2 days cleaned it out okay for $20.00.

If you have a power washer use it to flush out all the carbon build up.

I know the auto hot dip works, some get fussy about wrecking their fluid. The car wash is new to me. I like the fire method. And it appears factory when done, not likely gold anymore. But it cleans it, and it rings again! Vintage Bob

Soak it with oven cleaner to loosen it up and then rinse and repeat if needed.

Is that the "throw it in a bonfire, open a 12 pack of beer and pick your pipe up in the morning" method?? Heard from several it works, but never had enough carbon or enough of a bonfire to try it. I've used oven cleaner to remove carbon on the first 6 inches or so or a pipe. Apply, let sit, take metal brush to. Repeat about 4 times. But you can't get down in the pipe with a brush. I don't know if the oven cleaner got the rest out of the pipe or not because I really couldn't see that far into it. But the first six inches looked awesome.

I acquired a used pro circuit platinum for the cr250, it was ridiculous heavy and obviously did not resonate anything but spooge. I believe it was a quarter inch from front to back! Got the fire going, legal size of course, 20 some inches, put the pipe in till it was good and red, it never got yellow. I could see the spooge finally burning off, a couple of hours tops. After it cooled, I put some big nuts in the pipe and shook it, rinsed and repeated till all the carbon fell out. Then it got duct taped, filled with water and carefully placed in the freezer over night, lazy dent removal 101. Factory new pipe. I should start a service for a hundred bucks a pipe? I think there is a guy cheaper on the net. Vintage Bob

I have an FMF gold series pipe, and I can only imagine how much spooge is inside it... Will throwing it in a fire ruin the outside nickle finish or whatever it is though? I need something to clean it out.... I'm also going to try the freezer method on my dents, hopefully it doesnt break the welds on the pipe!

Took a little advice and kinda put my own twist on things. I used charcoal, the kind u grill with and an old large truck rim. I placed charcoal in rim and lit then placed pipe on top. I thne poured another bag of charcoal and completely covered entire pipe, except for a small portion of where it connects to silencer. Let it burn till charcoal was dead, it smoked violently out the pipe, for about 45 minutes then stopped, thats when i assumed it was done but left it there anyway. Pipe lost all the shiny color, but it was clean inside. I then took about 5 handfuls of small gravel chips and put inside and shook till i got tired. Rinsed several times with water and watched all of the burnt up carbon fall away. Pipe is now about the color of what a chrome pipe looks like after it gets hot, a bluish pinkish color. Performance is better than looks to me anyday and pipe now sounds like an FMF fatty pipe, got the PING back. Also dont try the water freezing method unless you have a large chest freezer, it can be a mess.

I was REAL surprised the pipe fit in a side by side. Use a lot of the strong grade duct tape, it works best, and when it lets the ice bust through, its done and no mess.
