Clutch Basket Question

Is it a bad idea to file the grooves down on the clutch basket while the basket is still installed on the bike? I don't have the neccassary tools to remove the basket. Or would this probably be a bad idea since the shavings would fall inside the case?

I have filed minor ridges from the basket before, although it's not a great idea. Because our hands are not accurate machines, we may file one "finger" more than another........causing uneven drive-plate contact. Uneven pressure can put bigger loads on SOME of the fingers (you don't want the basket to break while riding.) File it lightly, file it once......... if you file with the basket on the bike, ride it long enough only to warm up the oil and then change it. Save your pennies for a new basket and plates (worn tangs on plates will wear basket rapidly)

I would not file it while it is still installed. You dont want to introduce any more metal shavings in there then what there already is. You can remove it without a clutch holding tool.
(I assume that is the tool you say you dont have) Just do this.

Put the bike in gear. Find a way to wedge the rear brake down as tight as you can. On mine, I step on the brake and put a socket in the swingarm hole since the brake pedal is right there. the socket wedges the brake pedal down. Then just use the correct socket size on the boss hub and a long breaker bar or torque wrench and you should be good to go.

I'm still deciding if I really even need to file the basket down at all. It doesn't look bad. When I run a flat head screw driver over the notches, the driver tip doesn't get stuck in the grooves, so they arn't very deep.

Yes you can file it by hand if money is truly an issue. You will need to use the deepest grooves as a filing guide. file as slow and evenly as possible until the groves are just barely there and visible and even in size do not go any deeper as you will off set where the plates had found their most forward contact point.

Ok I got the basket out... I take back what I said about it not being notched too bad. I think I am gonna have to replace it.

They are just sooo damn expensive :(

Also, whats the deal with removing the primary drive gear off the clutch basket? I see that its rivetted on there...

Also, I have a Driven clutch plate kit on the way, and about to order a Vortex Hinson clutch basket. These will work together right? And the stock primary drive gear will fit on the Vortex basket?

Should be instructions with the new basket about the gear swap. We've had great luck with the hinson basket (outer). Wish I could afford an inner, but stock inners are cheap, just too soft. Good luck :ride:
