clutch problem

I have a little problem with my clutch,as I release the lever the clutch only engages at the very end of the travel and when it does the bike shudders,I have checked everything to do with the clutch with no luck.The bike is a 99rm250 and the friction plates are 3mm thick, the drive plates are like new, the inner and outer basket fingers are smooth,the outer basket **** and needle rollers are fine as well.Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 2001 RM250 and the clutch engages at the end of the lever travel. This required a bit of a learning curve for me because the last bike I had was a 1988 RM250, where the clutch engaged much sooner. Check your free play in the cable. If it is shuddering maybe the clutch is not engaging completely. Clean and lube the cable and readjust. Good Luck.
