Well after that big disaster I had with my computer I've been finding all these other little annoying things that need to be fixed still. One of these is that I cannot make a direct type connection. For example AIM will not connect nor will WinMX (a music program). What I don't under stand is that after I got the computer working again bouth of these programs would connect to the Internet, then suddenly a few days later they decided not to. What could be causing this? I thought firewall but the settings are the same as before when they did connect. Also could Zone Alarm maybe in an effort to do its job it will not allow this kind of thing to connect? I'm at a loss here any help or ideas would be great. :worship:

From what I remember about my brief encounter with ZoneAlarm, yes it will stop most traffic unless you specifically allow it. I'm sure there are a handful of guys here still using it, hopefully they'll stop in and give you some tips.

Doubble click the ZA icon in the systray by the clock and look down the list of programs and services, find your AIN and music app and right click, under internet, click allow and allow server, there is an option also not to let Zone Alarm reclassify the settings or someting like that.
I upgraded my NAV anti virus after wich I found out ZA was blocking the liveupdate service, I manually allowed it and was back up with live update.

How would I do that if I don't have the icon on the tool bar?

If its running, it should appear as either a ZA icon in the sys tray, down by the time in the lower right of the screen, or as a green and red graph if there is IP traffic.

Re run the IE connection setup wizzard so your system realizes you have a network Inet connection. Most windows based programs, like MP use those settings to determine you connection type.
