Is there much power/top speed difference between the KX 500 and the CR 500?

I would put my money on the KX 500 if they were to drag race.

Also, anyone happen to know what year they stopped making the CR 500?

In a drag race the KX would smoke the CR. But the downside to the KX is everyting tends to break REALLY easily. The CR is much more reliable.

I'd have to disagree with the KX breaking easily. In the 3 years I've owned mine it has yet to leave me stranded or break anything of significance.I used to own an 86CR500 and I'd say the KX is much faster top end wise.It just seems to keep going where the CR signs off.Must help to have a powervalve.I'd agree the CR is a simpler and cleaner design.

That's the not the entire story though, with a powervalve, the motor can have a radical topend port style, and the powerband will take up the slack in the lowend, and make the motor seem like it's smooth. Without a powervalve, you can't have the radical topend because you won't have any lowend power.

David Greathouse ran a KX 500 with the IDBA and ran FF/SS with it. He set the National record at 10.26 @ 126 MPH. Pipe, carb, street tires and a wheelie bar. My brother ran my 1985 kx500 while we were testing the drag bike. Bone stock 17 days old. He went 13.54 @ 100.3.

I can't wait to get a KX 500 :)

I want a Good/great condition 1995 or newer bike. Looking to spend about $1,500 or so hopefully.

Guess I'll keep checking e**y :)

Good on you man for getting a 500. You will like it a lot. When it comes down to bike versus bike, the truth is it comes down to the rider. A seasoned rider on a CR500 can smoke another rider on a KX500 and vise versa. Both bikes have their pro's and con'. Either way, you will be happy I think in your choice. They are a lot of fun.

Don't give up on the CR500. Check out CR500riders.com. You'll find opinions that are completely different from the KX500 fans here.

It's 90% rider, 10% bike. CR or KX, big bore two strokes are a GAS to ride. Buy one and leave your friends in your roost. :ride:

I think alot of people are getting confused about what I meant by a kx 500 vs a cr 500.

I wasn't talking about racing on a track or in sand dunes, I was talking about a drag race where both bikes both start at the same time, and race down a dirt or pavement road about 300 yards or so. This wouldn't be a matter of how good the rider is (for the most part), it would be matter of which bikes accelerates faster. As far as the top speed, from what I have heard they are both the same. But I'm wondering which one actually gets there faster.

My money is on the kx 500 for the drag race....

From what I can remember about the articles I've read there seems to be a consensus that the CR500 is faster and has more sheer power than the KX...But the KX has a more mellow and easier to ride power delivery...

Didn't ya know that is what makes the planet spin? Two 2-stroke 500's on opposite sides of the world roostin it up. The moral of the story....they are both powerful bikes and who rides a 500 wfo all the time? I dunno anyone. Throttle control is the secret behind riding a red/green 500, unless you have a death wish. A drag..........both bikes are more than capable of spankin each other. It depends on who is riding. And what your personal taste is in bikes....if your for the KX....cool....I ride red. We all have our reasons why. I believe my CR's are dead reliable/simple and can take the KX. Gwcrim may believe his KX will stomp my bikes. See where I am going....this is a chevy versus ford thing. Find a bike that fits you and your comfortable with and roll with it.

heyyyyyyyyyyy.......... who asked YOU chapman!!!
LOL just kidding.

Personally I love KX's, so I'm gonna get the KX 500. If I was going to buy 2 motocross 500 bikes, I'd definintely get the CR 500 as the second choice though; I love honda.

I also like the way the KX's look; green is my favorite color.

I was looking at CR500s when I bought. But then I recognized that either bike was far beyond my capabilities so I chose the pretty green one too! Slime green is my favorite color. Bought my boy a pretty green KX85 as well.

Well I've ridden both and here's what I thought.

Given enough track in the drag the KX will out-run the CR cause it revs higher. However the CR500 hits like a demon in the low end, and the onslaught is scary. The KX did seem to have a smoother power delivery, but was still fast. From stats they both put out about the same hp but the CR does it at lower revs.
In summary the CR seemed faster because I wasn't opening either up on a long stretch very much, and in the rev range I was using mostly the honda exploded crazily. It was a late eighties CR500 (87 I think ) and they are known to be explosive. The KX was a 95 model. Later CR 500's apparently are smoothed out a little.
The CR500 was more fun.

Aside from power I would go for the Honda cause they are indestructable. Also I have heard that the KX500 is almost impossible to jet properly.

Good Luck
