cr80 head

my bro has a 1997 cr80r expert and the head gasket leaks and is forcing coolant out the over flow. i read in a book that the problem is around the cylinder studs and not the head. i was wondering if anyone else has that problem. and what they did to fix it. in the book it said to put it on a flat surface and go over it with medium grit sandpaper but i was thinking of just using a mirror and some valve grinding compound instead. please help

That would be a start with fine sand paper taped to the mirror & oil.

You could remove all the studs. Have a look at the studs & see if they have pulled the metal surrounding them or are themselves damaged. You could relieve the area if so.

Lap the 2 together with valve paste (being slightly careful where it goes).
