An hours drive to the moose run and my bike dies 4 minutes into the race:yikes: . Now, I know I needed rings but figured I would push it:bang: . Needless to say when I got back to the shop and tore it down the top ring had clipped the valve just a wee bit:whoa: . Now I think it goes without saying(but of course I'll type it anyway) I NOW need rings and a piston to boot. But I am curious........how bad does the cylinder wall need to be before I consider replating. Also.....the sleeve option is about as attractive as taking a bath with a toaster so save the skin on your fingers for that one

What bike are you referring to? I'm thinking you meant it hit the power valve on a 2-stroke as a ring shouldn't be able to contact a valve on a 4 stroke.

Taking a bath with a toaster, you mean with it plugged in??? If you have GFI in there, then you don't need viagra, just drop the toaster, clock radio, whatever in. Puts lead in your pencil in a heartbeat! Okay I'm done.

if you can mostly hone out the "damage" then you should be ok, but if there are deep scratches and what not then you'll have some problems

entry fee was the least of my sorrows but yea that too....

its a 2 stroke and the rings were evidently so bad they made just enough contact to catch and clip a small piece off. Dude at the speed shop says i can run it as is with a loss of compression for about 6 months. i cannot hone it because its plated it'll ruin it

250.00 at us chrome to weld and fix or a new one from suzuki for 450.????????
the one scratch is probably 1 mm deep or less 1/4 inch wide and 1 inch long at the top

You CAN hone it. How do you think the bore is brought to final size after plating, or deglazed when installing new rings. (hint HONING ;) )

I haven't seen the cyclinder so I can't judge the damage, but if you expect the new rings to seal you have to at least hone it. If you tore through the plating it needs to be fixed.

it just flat out sucks. I just won a namura piston on e-bay for .99c guess i'll take the savings and get it replated eh?

xcracer, sorry for your luck. Costly repairs suck big time. I broke the power valve on my '90 Katoom out in the desert. Hit the kill switch imediately upon hearing the rattle. Dead about ten miles out. It didn't do any damage to the cylinder, and very minimal damage to the piston. I replaced the power valve and bearings, piston kit,rings and wrist pin bearing. If I remember the OEM piston kit was around $250 something. I think when all said and done, it was around $500 bucks total. OUCH!
