Promising Canadian youngster Colton Facciotti crashed in the whoops Saturday, ending up on his head with reportedly a fractured C2 in his neck :(

I just heard the same thing from my wife that works at the hospital. She couldn't give me any info, other than someone died. Sorry I don't know anymore info.

Lots of carnage - top contenders Tommy Hofmaster ruptured his spleen and Justin Brayton broke his foot. I hope the possible reports of a rider fatality aren't true.

Congrats to Brandon and the Frese boys by cleaning house in the 65cc class!

Glad to see Jesseman putting in some good results as well.

A friend of the amateur posted on mototalk that he came up short on a jump slamming his chest into the bars. He managed to crawl off the track and that was it he died from a ruptured aorta.

Sounds like a pretty tough weekend losing an amateur rider, Facciotti's injury, Hofmaster ruptures his spleen and local hero Brayton breaks his leg.

Aww man, a 20 year old who's been riding for 6 months and racing AX without a chest protector.... makes you wonder if safety equipment coulda helped avoid this unfortunate accident. :( I hate reading posts like this. My heart goes out to Brandon's family and friends.

Nikki, I'm not sure why the medical examiner thought a chest protector would have helped, because it was a deceleration injury. Theoretically, a chest protector would have increased the risk of aortic root separation.


Either way, what a sad, sad day for all of us.

I think what he means is the chest protector wouldn't give as much as the body would, therefore making the deceleration potentially worse.

The aortic 'root' exits the left ventricle superiorly, then makes a 180 (a "C" shape) so that it traverses the thorax and abdomen (longitudinally) just in front of our vertebral bodies. The "C" part above the heart is not secured well with connective tissue. As such, it's only point of attachment is to the left ventricle at its root. This is a big artery (1 or 2 inches in diameter), fairly heavy, and only attached to one spot rather loosely. When a sudden deceleration occurs, the momentum of the "C" part jolts forward, ripping the aorta off the top of the left ventricle, it's only point of attachment.

Remember the guy that tried to jump the Caesar's Palace fountains about a year or 2 after Knievel failed? They had thoracic surgeons waiting for him just for this reason. And whad'ya know, his sudden 'deceleration' into a stiff hay bale at 80 or so separated his aorta. They surprisingly were able to save him and sewed everything back up before he got to the hospital. :yikes:

That guy came to mind when you were originally explaining this, Neph. His crash looked alot like a ricochet, and less like a complete and abrupt stop. With the way they are building SX triples (even at local venues), I'm surprised we don't see more of this. The last time I saw the Caesar's Palace guy on TV, he was still in a wheel chair. I guess we should all consider ourselves lucky if we break only a limb or two on a bad landing.
