Is diet coke bad for you or is it an "ok" replacement for water? Or is it ok to drink it just as long as I drink my normal amount of water (3-4 glasses a day)?

That which you refer to as Nutra Sweet contains aspartame, which the "experts" (I use that term loosely) have determined to have 96 or so detrimental effects on the human body.

Whatever, I drink diet Coke like it's going out of style and I'm perfectly normal...?

It's a generally accepted thought in the fitness world that aspertame (however it's spelled) should be avoided. Nothing is better for ya than water. If you need some flavor, Crystal Lite is good stuff with no added crap. Check the sodium content of Gateraide! Expensive and many believe actually bad for you in the long run.

OK so Aspartame is bad for you, but at the same time I do have a bit of a craving for sweet. I try to avoid sugar (calories) so is there a safe alternative?? Is Equal OK? What are my alternatives (if any)

Try apple juice or orange juice instead of aspartame. Equal can cause insomnia. Leave the man made stuff alone. You can't do better than mother nature.

Nothing beats beer for maintaining your weight.

Oops, I came in the back door and didn't realize I was in one of the "serious" forums. But my comment still stands.

Sodium is salt, right? Well, theres a good reason they have a lot of sodium in Gatorade, it helps with cramps and such. Two years ago I was playing football and had bad cramps in my leg, stretching didn't help. Then I got a tip from a kid from another school with similiar cramps, all he did to get rid of them was put like an extra teaspoon of salt into his water or gatorade. It helped immensely and I no longer had cramps. :thumb:

salt is sodium chloride. so its both soduim and clorine

I drink alot of gatorade since its mostly water and it tastes great.

As for racing, i drink pedialyte. Its made to hydrate babies and small children when they're sick and dehydrated. It works alot better and lasts alot longer than gatorade on hare scrambles and enduros

There is no replacement for water. And 3-4 glasses is not enough water for a regular person anyway. the 2003 RDA says 8 - 10 8oz glasses, however I drink far more.

regarding aspartame:

Although excessive use of anything can be hazardous (it is possible to kill yourself by drinking too much water but would you consider water a harmful substance?) I think the aspartame scare falls under the catagory of Junk Science A good viewpoint is expressed here.

The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation website has an article on aspertame and here is a quote from that article,
The metabolism of aspartame in the human body and the proposed toxicities from its metabolic components have concerned a lot of people and have been the emphasis of many post-marketing surveillance studies. Aspartame is metabolized by digestive enzymes and peptides to three common dietary components: amino acids, aspartic acid, and phenylalanine. Minute amounts of methanol can also be detected. Eating foods such as meat, dairy, fruits, and vegetables will also produce these same components, but in greater amounts than aspartame. For example, a glass of milk has 6 times more phenylalanine and 13 times more aspartic acid and a glass of tomato juice provides 6 times more methanol than a beverage the same size sweetened with 100 percent aspartame. Interestingly enough, it is impossible for humans to digest enough aspartame to raise the levels of these metabolic components to a dangerous level.

Another level headed article is here.

A parting thought, I get a hoot out of everyone that exsposses that ony natural things are good and anything man-made is bad; so go ahead and have some naturally occuring arsenic but don't forget to have your man-made telephone nearby to call 911.

In jest,

Joe

Diet Coke

I've heard it's a good degreaser on ferrous metal parts. It also cleans the corrosion off copper pipe and the nasty stuff that collects in the grooves of your golf clubs. I've heard Mt Dew is better though. :)

You guys should know about a natural sweetener:
It's called Stevia, and in concentrated form it's 300 times as sweet as sugar, it's a leaf that't originary of Paraguay.
Just do a search in google.

By the way, I grow stevialeafs and have my website dedicated to stevialeafs at www.steviaparaguay.com, but I'm not selling anything, just trying to inform the people that are looking for natural sugar substitutes.
