Anyone noticed that Dirt Rider had an ad last month for E-Z Wider "slow burning cigarette rolling papers?" I've seen it in there a couple of times. Not every month, but more than once. Shame on them for advertising that. What percentage of people that buy rolling papers put tobacco in them? Zero. Can't believe I subscribe to High Times magazine all of a sudden. :think

It 1st struck me as odd, when I saw the e-z wider sponsored Yamaha MX team @ the Nationals this year. They put money into the sport thru sposorship, so I say why shouldnt they be able to advertise in the mag? They pay for the add space, dirt ragger didnt give them that page for free. Even has a bike in the add.
IMO its no worse than DKNY on a Husky

It's wrong because DKNY is just clothes and EZ-Wider is drug paraphanalia. When I was like 13 or 14 I would sit at the magazine rack and read Dirt Rider at the grocery store while my mom shopped. Think of all the kids that read this mag at an impressionable age like that. They see a dude on a dirt bike racing team supporting rolling papers, and then get bombarded with weed at middle school all day. All the influences in their lives (people they look up to- dirt bike racers, and their peers) say smoking pot is okay. We've got a bad enough reputation already without being stereotyped like that.

Reminds me of the time last month when I got separated from my riding buddy in the woods, and met up with these 2 dudes my age (20) on the trail. We rode together trying to find a way out because they were lost too. Well after a while they stopped on the trail and proceeded to burn one right in front of me, then after a while after asking me like 3 times if I wanted some, got back on the bikes and rode whilst high. It was a truly uncomfortable situation. Had to hang around and ride with them because I couldn't ride alone while lost. They were from the area so I thought they knew the trails.

Friggin' pothead *******s :think The more I think about it, the more I say <<mod edit>> Dirt Rider. The only one I like is Trail Rider, but I need more than one mag a month because I go through them so quickly. Get tired of looking at Ken Faught's grinning face when I open the mag too. Dude rides dirt bikes for a living and takes pictures of fine models, plus takes trips around the world on dirt bike adventures as a VACATION. I'd like to punch that dude in the gut. That's just too much good fortune to be bestowed on one person. Plus they don't say anything sucks. Everything they review is like "10! A million! Five jillion!" They think everybody makes like $100,000 a year too, based on the prices of the hops ups and products they test.:think

I am amazed---

--that there can be that much of a market among dirt bikers to justify the price of an ad. :confused:

How about Metzeger smashing a TV set with a Sledge hammer with his eyes closed--( tee-hee ), what is the message they are trying to sell there ?:think

Or the new ad where he has a plate of glass smashed on his head.

EZ-Wider is a legal product. Since the price if cigarettes have gone up, I have seen more and more people rolling their own cigarettes. They have the right to advertise and sponsor if they so choose, this is still America is it not? We should not limit others rights because we are offended. I do not smoke any type of leaf legal or not, but I support the rights of sell a legal product. I thought it was stupid that when F-1 came to America they had to remove the cigarette sponsorship from their cars for just one race.

I agree with you totally. But you know as well as I do that rolling papers are marketed and sold to the folks who smoke herb. Hell, last Bugle Boy I bought had some skins in there for me. If there sole market were tobacco users, it wouldn't justify staying in business, let alone a high-dollar add. They know it too.
Perhaps the debate is deeper than this one issue(no pun intended).....:think

I have to agree with clutch, beer is legal ,should they be a sponsor too? OK maybe just for ATV races:confused:
Aint no mistaking what EZ Wider stands for. I don't want my kids seeing that advertised on a racer they might look up to and this from a former smoker:eek:

I think i saw the 2nd part to that ad in a Maxim magizine. There was a young lady sitting up in bed(naked) with a sheet wrapped around her with a look like this

If your kids cant handle seeing an ad for rolling papers then they are going to get eaten alive in high school. Who cares if they run the ad, they even have a picture of a bike. There are alot of dirt bikers that get high, there are alot of people in the general public that get high. I disagree with the smoking while riding, or at work.

If I remember correctly, I believe Emig was fired from Kawasaki for "drug-related" charges...

I saw the ad while reading the magazine at the store... I thought it was a bit strange too.

Last time I checked, smoking hindered your ability to endure long duration physical activity... Motocross=Long Duration Physical activity!

Regular cigarettes are bad enough... But imagine what you inhale when you smoke an UNFILTERED cigarette.

I can say that I have never seen an Alcohol or Tobacco or even a Rolling paper ad in any of my ATV magazines.

Just a reminder this is a FAMILY board and I think that any spelling of some words can be translated by 12-13 yr olds.....I wouldnt be happy at all if you talked in front of MY family,like a sailor....and my job as a parent is to teach my kids right from wrong no matter what their friends do or what they see in a magazine...

what I can't believe is how feeble minded people can be influenced by any sort of advertisement or the dreaded "peer pressure"
if you can't make your own decisions then you'll never make it in the real world, plain and simple. Now I for one would not be bothered by this sort of advertising, some of us poor hillfolk can't afford your fancy cigarettes, some people grow their own tobacco plants just because they can. Is it up to you to tell them that they can't do that, that they're killing themselves, walk right up there and knock on the door buddy. I don't smoke, but I support a person's right to choose to do so.

It IS all about choices and good parenting skills. If a kid is taught to make his own good decisions, AND he is given good examples and guidance, the simple exposure to something shouldn't mean he is going to partake in the activity.

America is all about choices and freedom. I, for one, don't think it a good thing to hide everything from our kids as if it doesn't exist. We won't always be there to guide them. We need to instill the values they need to survive and make logical decisions. If this is done properly, I feel a kid will be well equipped to make good decisions no matter what the exposure.

BTW...While having a first hand view of two different sorts of free-style riders at a freeride show, I pointed out to my 11 yr old to take note on how some of them act and present themselves. One of the mental melishu freeks was there and he was quite a dissapointing display compared to class acts like Tom Clowers and Kenny Bertrum.

Cripes, if they want to pump some cash into the sport, let 'em. They must not have done much market research, since very few MXers I know (heck, even just trail riders) smoke cigs, much less light up a toke!

(speaking of Winston Cup, has anyone noticed when they run a car-cam in Dick Trickle's car, he always lights up during a yellow flag?!:eek: Too funny!)

Well, I know 5 people who use rolling papers for their tobacco. One which uses it for "illicit" purposes. :( He doesn't bring it around me or offer it to, and even if I did want it I can't ride fast enough to flag him down to tell him. The guy hauls major butt on the track and the woods.

I don't advocate pot usage, I just think that you are stereotyping anyone that purchases rolling papers. Oh yea, my grandfather would agree... he still rolls his own.... cigarettes

Not trying to pick on this one quote -
as this thread seems to have a lot of posts refering(no pun intended)
to cigerrette and alchohol adverts in MX/SX.

Are a lot of you actually that new to the SX or MX or ATV sport?

The SX/MX series was sponsored for YEARS and YEARS
by both cigerette and alchohol as PRIMARY sponsors in the 80's to early 90's.
And dirt wheels and 3 & 4 wheel action certainly had those ads in that same time frame.

every pro SX rider had camel on thier number plates for years... as well as dirt track guys ..

David Bailey was the CAMEL GRAND national champion -
along with many many other famous racers ( jeff ward,rick johnson ) being the Coors silver bullet SX champions etc etc..

The sport gets more popular and forgets that the original sponsors money was good enough before ( when noone else would advertise)

Reynolds tobacco and budweiser have always been huge backers of all motor sports and boat racing.
Why would that be wrong?
last time i checked Surf detergent dint have much to do with MX -or stock cars..but certainlty backed the sport for awhile.

EZ wider is a LEGAL product, and deserves the same treatment as any advertiser.You can use any number of products illegally if you so choose.
A wierd product to tie into moto...
but the ad isnt particularly offensive in most peoples opinions? and they do run a MX team on the national circuit.Seems in-line that they would advertise in the dirt mags.

a better question might be WHY is that a good way of advertising for them?
obviously theyve studied the demographics of diffrent sports and activities and mags and this seemed the best place to put their advertising dollars .

touche. Last two rides I've been on at least one rider has broke out a smoke at a rest break..... Seems to me that EZ Wider might have found a target audience.

And, yes - we did all enjoy a beer upon returning to camp/the house.

Well said AJ. Kids can't be sheltered from everything; therefore, parents need to inform them of what is right and what is wrong.
