One of the bikes I'm looking at is a KX250. The owner says that the owner before him lost the title. How important is the title on a dirtbike? Could I theoretically buy the bike and the previous owner say it was stolen? Is there any way I could get a title after buying a bike? Thanks! Matt
every bike i have ever bought, there was no paper work for, and no title. i think you need a title if you are planning on putting your bike on the road or racing it. im not 100 % sure about this but this is what i believe to be true. if you ask them to write a receipt or something with theyre signature on it, i dont think they will be able to say that it was stolen. hope this helps.
My bike does not have a title and I just racd it a couple of weeks ago in a AMA sactioned event. So that theory is out. I would have to agree if oyu plan on getting it street legal you will need one but if you plan on only offroading you'll be fine. Also a paper with his signature is a good idea.
I guess it depends on what the ORV laws are in your state. Here in Iowa, all off road machines are now titled. If you have to register your machine to ride in any state parks there, you will need at least a bill of sale, which can be a hand written and signed piece of paper. This will also help protect you from the seller claiming it was stolen. I've done this many times here in Iowa before they started titling bikes. Hope it works out for you.
I don't have a title for any of my bikes. The last one I bought, I did get the VIN before buying and had the local police dept. check if it was stolen.
