Please dont laugh me off the board.
Ok so im getting into riding after a long 20 years. and i have forgotten everything. when they say fuel /oil ratio is 50:1 how much is 50 and im assuming 1 is a gallon. does this mean half a gallon of oil to 1 gallon of fuel?
this means 1 part oil to 50 parts gasoline. or for 1 gallon, put in 2.56 ounces of oil in. if you decide to change the ratio, you can use this web site to calculate it
Or the calculator on your PC.
1 litre = 1000mls. Divide 1000mls by whatever ratio you've been given... 50:1 would equal 1000 divided by 50, which equals 20mls. Just change your fuel quantity # to however many litres you are mixing. Example 20litres.. is 20000/50, which equals 400ml. Do the math properly and don't trust mix cards coz they often round down their numbers making some listed ratios not completely accurate.
Yeah I suppose you'll be converting from gallons to litres first. About time I'd say.
A btw..where I would suppose you got the 1/2 gal of oil in a gal of gasoline is 50:1 is thinking about percentages. A ratio is not a percentage. Well, you can figure a % from a ratio if you like, but keep the numbers straight. Mixing at 50:1 ratio doesn't give you a 50% by volume mixture. If you mix as per the original question, what you end up with is a 2:1 gasoline/oil ratio.
A 50% mixture would be equal parts gasoline/oil...1/2 of it oil (50%), 1/2 of it gasoline (the other 50%). Which would be...what? 1:1.
Yeah, a ratio rite is handy. Get a lid for it!
Consider that a quart of oil (one'a those US measured things) in five gallons of gasoline (another US measured thing) will give you a 40:1 gasoline/oil ratio.
One gallon equals 128 ounces. Divide 128 by 50 that equals 2.56. 50 to 1 put 2.56 ounces of oil in one gallon of gasoline. For five gallons of gas multiply 5 times 2.56 equals 12.8. I would round that up to 13 ounces of oil for five gallons of gas.
2 pints to a qt or 32 oz. 4 qts to a gallon or 128 oz. So a 40:1 ratio means 1 qt x 40 equals 40 qts of gas to 1 qt of oil. 40 qts of gas divided by 4 qts/gallon = 10 gallons of gas.
