dune suspension characteristics

When dune riding what kind of suspension action are you looking for when compared with other types of riding? Should the the compression dampening and rebound dampening be higher than riding dirt because of the higher speeds encountered in the sand? Should the front tire be skipping over tire tracks with lots of dampening or should the ride be plush? I'm getting lost of tank slap no matter how much gas I give the bike and I'm curious which direction I should go with suspension adjustments.

I'm new to this style of riding so excuse the newbness. Thanks guys!

you have much longer bumps in sand, so if you leave the rebound at the std (fast or soft) your real wheel comes out before you reach the top of the bump - and kicks you.
so run more rebound (stiff).

you don't have square edged bumps in sand, so there's no need in soft compression. then, bumps in sand are much longer and deeper, forces your bike to compress due to it's own weight. so it's a good idea to stiffen the compression also
