I was reorganizing some stuff and came across these shots I took at the ECTA Speed Trials in Maxton, NC.

Maxton is sort of a smaller version of Bonneville but it's big on fun. :cool:

A couple more. The youngest guy on this crew was about 55 or so and they kept calling him kid. As Gordon Jennings once said "old go-fast guys have no wrinkles on the inside", and these were some seriously fast old guys.

When they lit that thing it made such a ferocious sound even god flinched. :cool:

I'll dig through my stuff and see if there are any more keepers.

The "Mercedes" is a big block (really BIG cubic inch) Chevy powered roadster. They grafted the Mercedes grill on the front to the sprint car style front end. Talking to these guys I got the impression they used the Mercedes grill just to piss off their eurotrash driving friends. They seemed to really be enjoying how annoyed Mercedes people got over the whole thing. They were some pretty cool old dudes who were serious speed junkies. If memory serves correctly the car saw in the 185 range at Maxton that day.

Next time I go I'll take notes as I'm shooting pictures so I have some stories to go with the pics.

Here are a couple of so so pics of some extremely cool vehicles.

The meanest sounding V-Max I've ever heard. It sounded like an open piped 302 Chevy Trans-Am car.

Turbo BSA single

Cool old Jag with a Pro Mod spec big block Chevy. The talk was it was a 1000+ HP engine under the hood. I didn't get to talk to the owner, but it sure sounded like it was true, and it accelerated at an insane rate.

Laugh if you will, but this little bike holds 7 LSR records. Next week he was going to ride it in a Vintage MX race. This is no trailer queen. :cool:

This is a turbo Busa built by one of Earnhardt's crew guys. The prep and fab work on this bike was nothing short of amazing.

A bike to make Burt Munroe smile.

I have a friend with a turbo'ed 1913 Excelsior. It's not a trailer queen either.

Apparently it wasn't unreliable enough in normally aspirated form to satisfy his anglo-moto sensibilities. ;)

Looking at the wider view this looks like a twin. 89r do you recognize the model?

Looks like an A-65 Rich. A 650cc twin.

Rich's photos inspired me to look up more info on the ECTA. My dad, brother and nephews live in Raleigh, and I figure the will get a kick out of goind down to Maxton.

BTW, I found an underhood pic of that black Jag. It's packing twin turbos.

ECTA meet results and home page are at http://www.ecta-lsr.com/

They do 5 or so meets a year. Looks like the Jag ran a best of 178.809 mph at the October, 2007 meet. :ohmy:

According to the excel sheet at the ecta link for the same event, the #5111 VMAX ran 201 mph. The #9543 BSA ran 122 mph. The Mighty 100 Yammie ran 75 mph. Not bad for a naked bike with 6 cubic inches. :ride:

Oh, that #8-B 'busa went 237 mph. :boss:

From what I can tell, the speed traps are at the end of a 1 mile run. So some of these beasts might be able to go even faster with more room to stretch their legs.

I like Rich's first image very much. Too bad about the plastic trash can and other items at the right of the frame. It would be a good photo with or without the dude in front.

Dave - They will love it. It's totally low key and laid back. Enough rules to stay safe, but no one beating the fun or creativity out of it. It's a lot like drag racing was in the early days.

I never would have guessed it was a turbo by the sound of it, but the speed had insane turbo horsepower written all over it. :cool:

Here's another car I thought was really cool. It's an old belly tanker that was having some engine problems but seemed like it had some potential.
