So I'm going to try to get my bike registered this week. As long as that goes through I'm going to have to come up a lighting set-up. I only plan to use it as a commuter to work on road and keep it very off-roadable. I don't plan to change any suspension. The inspection laws aren't crazy on motorcycles here so it shouldn't be too much other than obvious things like mirrors, lights and tires. There's several options from simple and cheap to extensive and expensive. I want to stay somewhere in the middle. I want it done right but not overdone.

Obviously the crf has no lighting coil so it will need a stator, check that off.

Now my choices start. AC/DC? To battery or not to battery, That is the question. Sure, we can do a simple AC system with filament bulbs. But we can use way cooler LED T/S with DC. :boss:

Lighting kits. There's a couple kits made for my bike but they're spendy for what you get. Then there's the ones made for the "X" crfs that have alot more components for alot less money. If I add a lighting coil why wouldn't I be able to adapt the X kit to my bike? I have a very good understanding of automotive electrical. This is really similar if we use the battery, how does the AC system work? Most of the kits include a regulator to run them AC or DC. Other than that what is required other than a handlebar switch, a wiring harness and lights?

Here's some of the things I've been looking at....

Joe.

I prefer the Baja Designs, quick detatch kit. Simple and easy to install and you can remove it in minutes if you want to go to the track. They can rewire your stator too.

Here in Kalifornia, we have to have a battery. The tail light/brake light has to work with a dead engine to be legal. The kit comes with a small niCad battery pack mounted behind the headlight.

The BD kit appears to be short a few items that are included in some lesser priced kits. I will need 2 mirrors and a horn on top of the 500 dollar light kit, not to mention the speedo/odo, kickstand and tires. I still need a lighting coil on the bike to run it correct?

You need a higher output wattage stator like you stated.
Then a 12v regulator so it dont blow bulb(or battery if appliable) with too high voltage peak.
Then without a battery, the light will go low when the engine is at idle. To add a battery, you need a rectifier (take ac to dc) to charge the battery with dc regulated volt.
That the cheap way.

hope it help.

Do what you have to do Joe. But, the extra unloaded time on a 2500 dollar race engine is questionable, no? The amount you are looking at to make it work, thats got a beater street trail bike wrote all over it. Chinese harley!

I figure for the money it will cost I couldn't buy anything street legal and if I could it would most likely need a grand worth of work to get it right.

I made a fair bit more progress yesterday. I went to the local notary and got the forms to change the title from ORV to motorcycle so it can be plated. The inspection station says I don't need a battery so that will save me a few bucks.

Hopefully progress will continue to be made, I'll keep you guys posted.

pennsylvania recquires your tail light to stay lit 20 minutes after you shut the bike off so you will need a batterry. I think the cut off year was like 1974, the same year as turn signals recquired. the inspection station you are taking it to is a little "loose" but hey if they will sign the paperwork

Can you give me the PA code number on that? I spent alot of time researching this and as far as I can see I technically dont even need turn signals.
