I have tried a couple of these recently, like limewire and bearshare, besides the ones I have used in the past, like morpheus and kazaa. No doubt they are useful programs, but according to news reports, most of them also install spyware or trojan viruses that don't get detected by antivirus programs. The only way I have able to detect these is by scanning with ad-aware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/index.html, with their most recent reference file. Removing the spyware part of these file sharing programs sometimes renders them inoperable (eg kazaa).
There is a fair bit of info on spyware which can be found with any search, but like anything, it's difficult to get a complete picture of what effect spyware can have in the real world - and how much is paranoia. I'm curious how many people who do file sharing are concerned about spyware?
