The extra weight on the flywheel gives the engine more momentum, if you will. It makes it much more difficult to stall the engine at low revs, since the weight of the flywheel continues to turn the engine over. It also tames the "hit" of a 2t engine a bit, smoothing out the overall power delivery.

It also makes the bike rev up slower... it's a trade off.

Quite the shock going from my streetbike (Buell XB9SX air cooled twin with massive flywheel) to my dirt bike (KDX-200 with virtually no flywheel).

KDX = virtually no flywheel??

I sentence you to two laps in a wet, root and rock filled hare scrambles on a recent RM250. :-)
