Hi guys I am new to this list so Howdy!!

I recently bought a 88 kdx 200, I checked the rims and they were fine.
I have since done a few small jumps, no higher than 8 ft, and I have noticed some cracks on the rim.

I was wondering if there are any other modern bikes with similar wheels or rims?? In paticular a 2002 cr250????

If not I am looking at paying for a rebuit DID rim for about half of what I payed for the whole bike........ ouch

Cheers for the help
Justin

So find a 2nd hand wheel from a breaker. Check the yellow pages or bike mags. You probably won’t find an 88 wheel so just get a suitable rim the right size, they are all 36 hole on all but oddball pommy bikes (& some early Kaw road bikes I think). Then either send it to someone to rebuild or do it your self which is not that hard.

How badly is it cracked? DID is not the best rim on the market, but they're not that bad either. Mine got a tiny crack on one side, so I drilled a very small hole right at the end to stop it spreading, then put a bit of silicon in it to keep the water out. It worked, that was three years ago...

If he’s jumping it 8ft then ain’t no way I’d suggest you do on an old bike esp with a duff rim. Often they delaminate from sitting with water in them for a while.

Fellas,
On that topic of how high should I jump with an 88 model??
The back susp is a little soft at the moment and the cylinder is wound up all the way.
I was wanting to do a bit of MX riding, especially doubles and table tops. I've only done medium size stuff now. I have seen people eat it on landings as some bikes jumps back up. My bike doesn't seem to want to do that, but I don't want any hospital visits!!
How high could I go?? asumming landing on gravel or hard ground??
I find that sand is not a problem with medium size jumps.

Cheers
Justin

Well a mx bike has an extra couple of inches travel & newer bikes have better suspension than older bikes even without the wear & tear age will bring. An 8ft jump is pretty damn high for something to go wrong, if you miss the landing point & have to rely on the suspension for a dead landing I think your kidneys would not be happy.

If this is what you want to do I would save for a late model mx bike. A lot of people get hurt so I would use the tool for the job, not a forest specialist bike (for which the kdx is premo).

A suspension upgrade will do if you want to jump the bike. The kdx has full travel suspension, its just very soft. A good suspension company can hook you up with stiffer springs and a revalve.

If MX is going to be your main thing, I would suggest just buying an MX bike.
