fuel:oil ratio

Hi, I am new to pre-mix bikes. Just bought a '99 CR250R and was told to mix 40:1, then I read here on the forum that people mix 35:1 and in my owners manual that I got with the bike it says 20:1 (and 32:1 for CM type oils - whatever that is..). Just had a burnt out crank too, so I'd like to get some idea of what is good an what isnt, and why. I ride in Tanzania-Africa at an altitude of 1000m and 0m. I have been using the castrol tts oil so far.

I mix my KX250, when it runs, on 40:1 using Putoline MX5 works a treat ;) I did use Silkolene Comp2 Plus but it was crap! I used to mix 32:1 but leaning her out a bit made all the difference, especially since I ride on a tight track in a field so I haven't got the chance to floor it all of the time :(
