Getting a KLX 110: a couple of questions

I want to get my son a KLX 110. I've read some other posts on the bike (which make it sound great), but I have a few more questions.

First, what's a good price on the bike? My closest dealer is saying he'll give it to me for retail price ($1,699) plus tax. That is, he'd only be willing to waive the freight and set up charges. That seems like a bit of a rip off to me. If anyone who has bought/priced one can tell me what they came up with out the door, I'd appreciate it (also, let me know what sales tax is where you live so I can compare).

Second, my son is not to tall and pretty light. He'd probably have an easier time with an XR 70 (similar seat hight, but less weight) to start with, but I need the bike to last a couple of years. Is there any way to lower the seat on the KLX (slide fork tubes? increase pre-load?)? If so, how far can you lower it before it really affects how the bike rides?

Thanks for any thoughts!!!:)

I think retail without any set up or freight isn't bad here in SoCal. It's definitely not "rip off" territory. You wouldn't lose much if you turned around and sold it yourself. As to lowering, I can't say. But the KLX is not very much taller than an XR70, I don't think.

I think the KLX's are awesome.

I went and priced them here in Salt Lake last week and found $1,600 plus tax to be the best price here anyway which I thought was good considering they wanted $1,000 for a PW-50.

you are not getting ripped.

I sat on one at a dealer once. I'm 14 and found the suspension to be very stiff. I dunno how a lil 65 pound kid would do. Other than that it felt like a quality bike. (not a tin can like my old pw80)

Check http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40533 for some good info comparrisons.

KLX 110 = 26" seat & 141 pounds - $1799
XR70 = 25.5" seat & 126 pounds - $1399
TTR90 = 24.6" seat & 132 pounds - $1699
Suzuki JR80 27" seat height, dry weight 127 lbs - $1899
Yamaha PW80 - 25" and 126 lbs - $1299

$1600 or $1699 is a fairly good price. I was going to get my son the KLX110, but managed to get a 2001 JR80 for $1400 OTD. So far, we are very happy with this choice. Jonathan turns 8 next month, and barely fits the JR :)

When the 110 first was announced my dealer showed me his cost vs. the msrp and we laughed. There was about about a $200 (if that) profit margin so don't expect much discount.

110

My 7 year old LOVES his KLX 110, its a tad too big for him, but it should last for a few years. We trail ride only and it is perfect for that, easy to maintain as well. Zero problems so far, its powerful enough for my wife to ride even. It looks just like a motocross bike. If somebody would make one of these with REAL suspension & lighter weight it would be hard to keep in the showroom. Maybe yamaha will come around with something. By the way we paid 1699 Out the door for ours. so your not getting a bad price.
