A group of us, including several DRNers will be taking a long weekend riding trip in late February to visit and ride with some buddies of mine in Oklahoma. While we're out there, we're considering hitting a race in the area. I noticed that there is an eastern round of the WORCS series in Gilmer, Texas on Feb. 22-23. I know that course is part of the Texas cross-country series, anyone ridden it and familiar with the course and layout? Also, that same weekend, there is a Central Oklahoma Off-Road Series race in Wellston, Oklahoma. The Wellston race is right on our way home and would be more convenient to run. Anyone familiar with the terrain and layout at either location? Smitty?

I live near the Gilmer location and ride there often. Many different course layouts possible on 1600 acres. Plenty of rocks, mostly softball size down and elevation changes ie. up and down steep climbs thus the area name Barnwell Mountain. Climbs are not long by Rocky Mountain standards but can be just as steep. There should be relatively little or no mud and the land dries fast since it is high and pourous. Area is wooded and trails will be single track and jeep road based. TCCRA events have used mostly the same 8 to 12 mile loop run in opposite directions in different years. Dirt Rider.nets should discover this riding area.

Thanks for the information, John. I sure appreciate it! It sounds like a fun riding area and should be a fun race...very tempting.

Anybody have any information on Sooner State Cycle Park in Wellston, Oklahoma where the COORS series race will be held that same weekend?

The Wellston OK race is probably at Sooner State Cycle Park. They have a natural terrian MX track with some good elevation changes. Dirt a little on the hard pack side... red sandy clay that can give great traction if it has enough moisture on it. Not a lot of built up doubles etc. There is also a woods loop about 6 or 7 miles. Open sections , but also some tight twisty trees. Some sections in the woods have some sharp drop offs next to them so a little care is needed. There will be some mud holes in the trees if there is any rain.

This is a thought for some of the guys from out west to come over to Perry Mountain in Stanton, AL to see if you could be the first guy from the west to win the Southeastern Shootout this race will draw about 800 riders from all over the eastern coast. First two years was won by a Indiana man, next year Connecticut, and last Alabama For info www.perrymountain.com *** come see who is the best***
