Goggles: tear offs or rollers?

Looks like the rain has me thinking about something like that..I'm leaning towards tear-offs for simplicity's sake, and since I would really only use them during a race or really muddy days, unless of course the roll systems work SO well I shouldn't pass them up? I currently have no sweat ll's, but thinking about the Oakley Enduro or Pro-Grip with posts...

I've never tried roll offs but I'm thinking about them aswell so I'd like to hear comparisons as well. What I will say is tear offs can be a problem in the rain/really wet muck. The rain gets in between the tear offs real quick, making the goggles useless until next time you stop. The roll off system has some sort of strip to stop this right? Does it work? Also trying to put on tear offs when it's raining is damn difficult, I was trying to do it in the pits at a 100 mile MX on Sunday, took me ages to get 5 tear offs on because the rain kept getting in between them.

Anyway, roll offs for rain?

I have the Pro-Grip 3400 seris goggles and I will never go back to anything else. In a pinch you can use the Oakley Classic "Tear Off's" with them. I have only the scratch resistant lense but if you treat them with 'Rain-X' you will love these goggles to death. I also use the "Quick Strap" system and it's a big :thumb: for the goggles and the strap system.

I hope this helps. I first bought Oakley's w/ tear offs. Rode in the rain with them, treated the lens with Rain-x before the ride. Worked ok. In hard rain you can't see s#it anyway. The Rain-x didn't seem to work like on my truck, not enough speed.

An old mud trick I learned worked well for the rain though. Tape an old lens to the front of your visor, works for mud, rain, and late sun.

Then I stepped up and got a pair of Smith Warp's. Again at first I used tearoffs. Then I got the roll-off system. There are a few tricks to be learned here as well. First you need to put on the mud visor on the upper half of the lens. This works well alone to stop mud from getting in under the film, but be careful of water, be it rain or splash back.

You think water is bad on tear offs, you can't tear off on a roll off. It sticks to the lens and creats a suction and you can't advance the film. You have to stop to fix it.

The next trick fixes the previous problem, well I should say makes it better. You loop some 2 to 6# lb fishing line around the canisters, going under the film. This creats a gap between the film and the lens should some water get under it. This one alone has worked well for me. Note: use the smallest line you can get, cause you can see the line in your near sight (close focus, like inside your goggles).

Some would say I go through too much just for some goggles. If any of you out there are like me, you like your focus on the riding experience, not on screwing around with something that isn't working right, like goggles. I like to set them up and not have to screw with them again.

And to add to this my riding buddy thinks it's funny to roost me on muddy days. Sound familiar to any one? To solve this one, I look at the conditions the night before and choose my goggle set up accordingly. Wet and muddy- roll offs; loamy to semidry- tear offs; dry-neither.

One last note, if anyone has a partner like I do, a good defense to use is to duck your head right before the roosting comes on. This saves your goggles and your face. JMO........Good luck.

p.s. I think the Pro Grip would be a kick-ass system if they would come out with some roll-offs. JMO....

Thanks guys, great opinions. I guess right now I'm looking for something pretty simple since Ill be using it for the first time at a race. I'll most likely go with the Oakley enduro and tear offs....if that doesn't work I'll look at the roll offs.... it's not supposed to rain sunday so I should be ok.

I've used both roll-offs and tear-offs. I prefer tear-off due to roll-offs sticking to the lens and the time I caught a branch and had 20 feet of mylar whipping around behind me. However on public land roll-offs make more sense.

Woods, I agree with you about the litter issue. I am always amazed at the trash I see out on the trails. If I am riding w/tearoffs I always tear and stuff in my waistline. Whenever we stop I put it in my camelback, and I usually find my self picking up other trash on the trail also. We all gotta do our part, even if others don't (they know who they are, or maybe they don't). :think:

Tearoffs- Good/better for dusty and rain days. If the rain gets too bad or too much dust under the stack of tearoffs, you can pull the whole works and hope for the best. Bad/worse for multiple roosting situations due the limited number of films loaded. It is nice though, when you pull a TO, you get a full clean view again.

Rolloffs- Good/better for damp soil conditions when you are continuously being roosted. You get many-many goggle cleanings. Bad/worse for dusty/rainey days; once you get water or dust under the film, you're hosed.

Smith makes a lens for rolloffs that is dimpled. When you put the lens up to your face you can't see the dimples at all and they keep the film from sticking to the lens.

I can't STAND having my vision obscured even the slightest! A friend of mine regularily comes in off the track with so much muck on his goggles that I'm not sure if he's in there or not, don't know how he rides at all! Anyway I am happy enough with my Oakley 2000 with tear offs in mud etc. but as soon as it starts raining they become useless pretty quick, that's why I was thinking of getting a set of roll off Smith's for the rain, by the sounds of it that would be a complete waste of money? Anyboyd think otherwise?
