I'm gonna buy one from a local salvage yard, to fix up this summer.

It will be a fun little bike to hop on and screw around with.

they have lots of old ones there that were parked running, for like $50-100 bucks or so, some more.

what brand and or engine size do you guys recommend? I'm going to be using it like a pit bike, for messing around in my yard, the fields, and maby on our dirt roads and 2-tracks.

were there any ones built with rotary valve engines( like on 70's kawasaki's?)

How bout an 80 or 81 Suzuki rm 80, twin shocks, long travel, you could hook it up and race it in the vintage mini class.

I be more inclined for something bombproof. Like any of the little XR'sor CT's from Honda. Parts are still easy to find and they are solid little bikes.

The Honda's I mentioned will have 4 stroke, air & oil cooled engines.

Yamaha had a 60 that was rotory valve called a JT1? me and almost every one my age learned to ride on one, so should be alot around. Suzuki and kawi also made some rotary valve small bikes, don't remember much about them or if they made one just for dirt. I would recommend a yamaha GT 80, its a cool little bike, 2 stroke but not a rotary valve, should be easy to find and get parts for. If a 4stroke will work, you cant beat a honda XR 80 or even a 75, I would agree they are "bomb proof". When I was a kid used a XR 75 for my paper route, it kinda got handed down with the route. At least four paper boys thrased that poor bike over about 5 years on a 15 mile route. I think it just turned to dust one day.

thanks!

pryor, that is what I was looking for.

I like the bikes because they seem to start easy, and you dont have to replace reeds.

and they take off like a 4 stroke, even if they are 2-strokes.

Most of the old Kawasakis were rotary valved, including the KE100. The Suzuki TS100 and TC100 were also rotary valve.

I second the recommendation for an XR75. They were great pit bikes of that era.

My first bike when I was a kid was a rotary valve two stroke. 1976 Suzuki TM75, and it was a cool little bike.
It was a little small for me when we got it, but I had to share it with my younger brother who is four years younger than me. I was just happy to finally have a bike instead of riding all of my friends bikes. My friends were very cool but it is always better to own your own!
