Last year Cody D ended his season flying over a log in a corn field at 60 MPH. This year Cody Mastin is hurt badly in a field as well. Saturday I as well as maybe 15-20 others got screwed on some bad arrowing and missed check #2 so DQ'ed on Sat. OK, re boot and ride Sunday. I got a flat at the end of the section before the long one before gas. Heather S. helps me air up the tire and I check into the long section 1 min late, air comes out in a mle or so and i ride that 12 mile section with a flat rear. Don Marsh gave me air and i rode the next section with about 50 LBS in the rear and kept crashing in the muddy logs, so I crash my brains out in the mud. , . I did my best to get to gas, Tommy dunn Gets the spare wheel on at gas. Re focus and do real well in the second to last section from the finish-after the check out (ck#9) the connector trail is in a ditch with a bunch of junk in it and somehow I clip the end of my right hand pinkie on a steel fence post or something and take the end of my finger off-day is done. DNF and a shorter finger. End up spending the rest of the afternoon in the emergency room with Steel Man Ted and Connie. When I get back I find out my 2 other row buddies got flats in the very last section as well-so none of us had a great weekend as we all got DQ'ed on Sat and flats on Sunday. I';m on good drugs now and the finger will eventually be OK, but may never have a finger nail on it again and the SOB hurts! I'm thinking I may use Goshen as a drop next year before I get killed or something-those 70MPH corn fields are nuts.

Come to think of it I think Smitty broke his collar bone here last year or the year before. :coocoo:

Isnt survival mode just a wonderful thing Freddy??? I liken rides where you come home a day later then your suppose to with parts missing on the bike and on the body as a Survival Ride.. Survival Rides have many positive attributes that the add to the mundane life of a dirtrider.. The most profound attribute that I know of is the increase level of bench racing they produce along with the enduring nature of these bench racing stories.. I mean lets face it,,, a ride that produces shortened fingers, depleted pain killer inventories and visits to ER Rooms are some of the BEST fodder ever produced for bench racing...
All that said,, no matter what the statistics for that particular ride say, in my book you took overall status and I cant wait to hear more about the whole adventure.. Especially the part where the doctors cleaned out any wounds before any anestia was applied.. Any pics of the shortened fiinger??
And another matter,, what was YT1 doing in there??? Is he ok?
Good write up as always!

Ted and Connie transported me to ER, fed me a sandwich and assisted in giving the nurses and Dr's "the business" We explained that we were a little crazy and insisted on having fun even in the ER room. They will remember us I'm sure.

Thanks for the picture Ted, i e mailed it to my wife already!

I swore off racing in Indiana years ago for many of the same reasons. I always seemed to run out of luck when I went south of the border. In addition, it seemed like every time I went down there it was sleeting or snowing.

I’m happy to hear that you are OK. Look at the bright side.....you can still count to 9.5..... ;)

How’s Cody M.?

I'll have to introduce you to my 9 fingered neighbor who lost one dirt biking. Yeah definately not the safest race. I took it easy in the fields. There are some big rocks out there and it's like playing Russion Roulette!. Yeah that ditch was a little dangerous with them rail-road ties not even marked. Some orange spray paint would have been nice. A guy in front of me (wearing a silver helmet) was stopped and I think he hit one. I t-boned a fence in the middle of the woods. I was fine, but WTF is a fence doing in the middle of the woods. The trail went around the end, but as come up it looked like there is a straight line, except for the invisible fence. Some yellow ribbon would have been nice. Great fun trail otherwise.

Fred sorry to hear about the finger. I think you are right about the jinx part! We did a little early season deer hunting on the way down Friday afternoon - a 6 point buck did a nice number on the front of the Excursion. MIke K and I are some of those caught up in the Check 2 b.s. on Saturday. We did ride out the rest of the day and had fun, but wasted a bunch of energy we could of had for Sunday for nothing.

Sunday in the woods before the check into the first section, I wacked a tree hard with my left foot - somehow got my middle toe - right now it is about the size of my thumb and rather ugly - pretty minor compared to coming up a digit short and Cody M's crash. I was able to ride out the rest of the day. I count myself as lucky! Somewhere in the first or second section Mike K had a bolt come off his rear brake master cylinder, crashed hard, then lost a ton of time fixing it. At a road crossing Tom D. gave Mike a bolt to get him rolling again (man how does Tom manage to be EVERYWHERE - Don Marsh to..I swear they were at every road crossing and then some!). My ride Sunday went OK for me - a few get offs here and there, and in my usual out of shape desk jockey fashion, was getting pretty tired in the last few sections.

I agree this one is a different sort of event - some of the crap they ran us through really should of been some how marked with ribbon, paint etc.

Oh - Fred it does appear I broke my run of flat tires in races - hope I didnt just pass it onto you!

Fred, Congrats on the Championship, sorry about the digit. From the look in you face I think they have good drugs in Indiana.
I hated that section by the tracks every time I raced there.

KTM Mike, its magic that is all I can say..........we went even following each other, our riders were quite a few minutes apart. :yikes:

The comment that I heard most was "Its been a long season "

Heal up fast.. Freddy. Wolverine423, thanks for checking and fixing my brake assembly on Saturday, the brake held up perfectly on Sunday. TDunn - thanks for letting Mike join you and AJ on Sunday. He really enjoyed it!!

Had a blast riding with some folks from the UP. Magoo, Frank, Paul, & Mark. Quotes of the day:
... "I let you pass because you reeved it up behind me - then you got out front and camped out and blocked me from passing you"

... "You are going to burn in hell for that".... "Yeah well - I'm driving home - you still need a ride"

..."You roosted me so bad... I couldn't breath". ...."Sorry you want a towel". ... "You going to ride with that Shat all over you" :rotfl:

bbarel - congrats on the Senior B class win.

My Goshen experiences have been varied -- I've suffered the jinx (4 years ago), and spent the night in Goshen Memorial. I am forever indebted to f&s for helping me to get home from that one.

Sorry to hear about all the carnage this year. I'm sending the most positive vibes and prayers I can to all of you to heal quick, well, and strong! I barely know Cody, but he always seems to be such a great guy; I know we all hate to see something like this happen to anybody.

salgeek, it was a pleasure riding with you. Except for that faceful of ROOST you nailed me with! Man, I've never had roost absolutely pack into my helmet like that.

Glad you enjoyed the UP Comedy Tour.

Shipwreck finally conceded, he was working me there for a while! I better train for the next event, I know he's gonna be out for revenge!

at the end i heard someone lost a finger, i thought he said that they finished though. just before we left i heard it was Fred, then wondered how you lost it.

looks like they gave you pain meds before they were working on you, must be nice...

that section was preaty bad, i seen a fence post and though that might hurt if someone was to hit it. we'll have to compare digits when yours heals up, sounds like we will both be nail-less.

oh, and those 70mph fields sucked. expecially when your bike tops out at 50mph. id pass someone in the woods, then once we get onto a field 3 people would go flying by, then drop into the woods again and id have to pass all three again.

heel quick Fred.

Man I thought I was the only one wrecking. I just went down for Saturday. It was my first race back from knee surgery so I figured I'd take it easy and go for the shorter day.

I stacked it hard on some wet roots and rocks after the gas stop. I suffered through and finished. I took my boots off and my foot swelled up like a ballon and turned purple. I spent Sunday in the Urgent Care. Turns out I have a bruised collar bone and a severly sprained ankle. Fortunately no more broken bones. Amazingly enough I still had fun. What's wrong with me?

It's always a good fun enduro down there. You really have to work hard for your ride thats fo sho! I would rather deal with the slippery roots - mud/holes and logs all day then bust'n azz 70-80 mph down corn fields! But hey that's what the club needs to do to get us to the good stuff

I'm glad I missed out on the injuries - hope everyone heals up well. I was thinking about Cody's crash while I was riding across the fields. Fortunately for me I'm not out there racing for a win yet so I didn't feel the need to go nuts across the fields - kept it to 50 or so I'd guess. I took it easy through that ditch with all the debris in it too. When I saw the first couple railroad ties I decided right then that I wasn't going to push it through there. I did manage to somehow end up in the A section on sunday and man did that take a lot out of me! I had a pretty good race (for me) going until that point. I had a blast at the event though - very challenging for this newbie C rider. I could barely get off the bike at the end (actually, I just laid there on the bars for a few minutes before I did).

I had my jinx last year on the 2nd day when I hit a rock in a corn field at about 70mph. It was not a pretty sight but luckily I on suffered a type 3 concussion and 2 bruised lungs. I had a nice visit to Goshen Memorial but was released after a couple CAT scans. I did notice that there were a couple barb wire fences that could have been marked better. Over all I took it easier in the corn fields and had a good time this year.

Didn't really notice the rocks but I sure did notice the elevations! My eyes were the size of saucers going down into the gravel pit :yikes: . The one big hill climb I made it 3/4's of the way up the first time when I stalled. Then I got a better run at it and was almost over the top when I started to wheelie and knew if I let off I wouldn't make it so I just gassed it and when I was vertical I shoved with my legs and arms and threw the bike over the top. Then I was grabbing at every little tree, etc as I was falling back down the hill. I finally got stopped halfway down and crawled my way back up the hill pulling on trees to get up the thing. Fun ride :p

I'd also be leary of taking the "good" line at the mud hole that Wilbur is "kindly" pointing out for you.

Here is some information I picked up from Theodore Harvey on "The Other Side Of The Story".
Fred was going through that section like BOOM,
Which gave him time to hunt mushroom.
A snap dragon he did not see,
Is what denailed his PINKIE.
