ok i just brought the KDX home and it decided its time for the clutch plates to become sticky. and after i tried and didnt suceed, my dad was a little more tougher on it than me. like it was grinding, so he slammed it into gear. and apparently just to start off in 4th or 5th does not work :) . anyhoo so my dad takes it for a little rip around our field and everything a A okay. so i take it for a little rip around the field trying to get used to it. (first time riding a 2 scoot) and i accidently started off in 2nd gear. its gonna take me a while to get used to it because i havent ridden a bike for about 5 years now. so here's where you guys come in, my dad says i cant leave the yard until i got the stopping end of the riding down pat. so my ? is there anything that i can work on in a field that will help me get up on the mountain faster? like to help me learn to get going, ride then stop and find Neutral faster? cuz riding in a not able to get outta 2nd gear going around and around and around will eventually get boring.thanx for any info.

You really can't work on mountain climbing skills in a flat field, but to can work on basic riding skills.

Make sure you ride off the seat, standing up, 98% of the time. Move your weight around the bike to see how different positions effect the handling of the bike. For up-hill practice, get use to riding with your head forward of the bars.

Finding neutral is easy...you just need to be aware of what gear you are in. When all else fails, just "click-down" 4 or 5 times and go for neutral.

Let us know how you make out on your hill climb.

thanx. im just not used to the 1st down then 2th,3th,4th and 5th up. cuz my quad is N,1,2,3,4,5 down.its all down. ya i personally feel that riding standing up is a little easier than riding sitting down. and i didnt think of the riding positions. im gonna be working on it tomorrow when i get home from school.

Congrats on your new bike. I just bought my son a very nicely restored '93 KDX200 which is his first bike. What a sweet bike it is too!

I have him doing the same thing- starting, stopping, riding circles around the big dirt driveway. Until he can kickstart the bike, pull away smoothly and especially stop smoothly he won't leave the yard. He's already taken out 4 sections of split rail fence (at one time!) because he panicked and didn't stop the bike when he goosed it too hard. He's learning though!

Don't get in too big of a hurry and listen to your dad. You'll get there!

one practice drill I've done is to place to objects, cones or whatever you have about 100 feet apart. From the first one practice taking off as fast as you can with your shoulders out in front of your hips and your chest and head out over the bars. Trying and leverage forward enough that the bike doesn't wheelie. Then when you approach the 2nd cone, practice stopping real hard and coming to a stop right at the cone. Do this back an forth a bunch of times, you'll get a feel for how the bike pulls on your body and how to work it from power to stops better.

yay im happy today. he let me go outta the yard and go up to the gravel pit. and i like 5th gear! its awesome. i did have my first experience of the ass end kicking out. i wasnt expecting it. what im wondering about is how to go through mud on a hard pack surface. like up at the gravel pit here, course its mostly gravel and rocks. but when there is a hard pack surface and it rains its like grease. i did get it into 6th, but my dad limited me to where i could go(i was by myself). so i went up just past a small bridge and turned around. it was far enough up that i could get into 6th be it'd be almost idleing. but it would go pretty good in 5th wide open. i had a blast. gonna go wash the bike. now that it has stopped raining.

there is a little trail that goes parallel(sp?, cant remember spelling) anyhoo and its wide enough that a quad can go through but mostly dirtbikes and it goes through the trees. i was going back and forth through it. and what i cant seem to do is if i get to the outside of a right hander then right after (like theres maybe 5-6 feet apart) and i if i get to the outside of the right hander then i cant get it back over to get in line with the next corner which is a left hander. i've always had trouble with turning right, with the throttle into my gut. i can turn a left hander no prob, and if the ass end goes out i can control it fine.
