i told several people at the track tonite about my upcoming anniversary. this is not one that i will celebrate. :ugg:

I hear ya. My ankle frequently reminds me of the 'ol anniversary. I can't run--subtalar joint fused (no movement) on its own owing to the crushing of bone and detritus in that space.

But I still ride. And I'm without pain on warm days. mx547, I think you owe it to yourself to see a dedicated foot and ankle orthopod. Do you have any avascular necrosis? My talar head has a very little amount, and is collapsed a few mm in 2 spots.

Ah, what we'll feel like when we get really old....just can't wait. :silly: But what else should we do? Sit on our asses? Aerobics? All those skinny, caucasion folks that diet and do high impact aerobics are going to be worse off.

not that i'm aware of. my doc hasn't mentioned it anyway. but then again, this whole thing has me completely confused. in case you don't remember, i had a tibial plafond fracture. what i have now, he calls post-trauma arthritis. i can't seem to find any info on that term per se. i always thought arthritis happened gradually, over time not as an immediate after-affect of an injury. he says it's probably as good as it's going to get. he says the bones are completely healed and did not recommend p.t. (i specifically asked). i've been working my ankle on a gazelle about three times a week and that has helped alot but everytime i think i'm turning the corner on this, i have a set-back and it's like starting over. the last five days or so, i've had so much pain that i could barely walk. i wore a brace for quite some time but once i got some strength back i quit wearing it unless i'm really hurting. it's been over a year and i still have swelling, pain and little range of motion (although it has improved slightly). it seems that the more i use it, the better it feels at the time but them i pay for it the next day or two. here is a link to a study on the outcomes of these injuries:

this is the same treatment that i had and many of the patient complaints are identical to mine. the conclusion is somewhat encouraging but damnit, i want to ride now!

Yeah, you'll always have arthritis in that tibiotalar joint. BUT--and this is really, really important--keep that damn joint moving at all costs. You've got to push it. I don't care if you have to use narcotics or even intraarticular steroids. The best way to fuse that joint is letting it be. The best bet on riding again (and you will), is to work the piss out of it. It'll take another year or so, I'd bet.

Can you put your last films up? I want to take a look at the tibiotalar joint.

I remember that you had external fixators, but did you have a delayed open reduction, internal fixation procedure done? Outcome may be better.

How'd you do it again? I would bet you cased a jump, like I did, but had your foot more forward on the peg so that calcaneous to talar to tibial plafond force was more efficient.

What gear? How fast? What kind of jump, if a jump?

I can answer part of that. It was a jump, a jump from hell. The landing was peaked and I would bet either his pegs hit ground or his heel did while on the pegs. I was hitting it in 3rd pinned, it was the last double out of a ryhthm section and you couldn't see the landing untill after you comitted. I cased it too and it hurt but luckily I was a little more over the jump when I landed I guess. tx246 cased it too that night but my guess is he was luckier than Jay and had his feet a little more on the pegs causing a torn ACL. For what it's worth, I never did that jump again.

I hate rhythm sections. Especially trying to double into a triple. I can't judge speed yet, and have to always 'think' about my gear and RPM. I tend to hit the face of the jump with my front wheel down. ;)

it was a weird combination of jumps. there was a single jump after a corner, followed by a small table top with a lip on the end, followed by another single (the peaked one). i rolled the first jump, then gassed it up onto the table top and tried to jump over the third one. i got squirrelly on the tabletop and should have backed off but i didn't. i landed directly on the peak of the third jump. i even had a skid plate--maybe they don't work. i knew instantly that my ankle was broken (or so i thought) and pulled off the track. i was in third. i should have been satisfied with that, i had a gap on fourth but i thought i could pull off a second. hindsight...

gene tried to jump from the first single onto the table top and came up short.

tell him nephron..............no pain no gain. maybe he will listen to you heheheh. my achilles is probably 95% now. i just got back from the backcountry and i was worried going in. carrying a 50LB pack and carrying that load up rocky hills. prior to the hike, my achilles still bothered me in the morning for the first 300ft of my day. i walked a little like frankenstien. the mountains/pack/motion under load has made my last little bit of pain non existent.

by the way jeff, send cards and letters to me........jay cant read yet.

for the record, i cleared the table top no prob. in fact that was the problem after the table is a pretty good drop. i fell from the sky like a rock and flatlanded in the bottom. i remember like it was yesterday............last yr.
