Hard to turn

Have a '95 KDX 200 in good shape. I was out riding over the weekend and got a chance to ride a friends '06 450 EXC. I was surprised how easy it was to turn the handlebars. On the KDX, it's like the tire is in mud. On the EXC, it's like the tire is on ice.

Any ideas why so hard to turn?

Tire pressure is good.
Bearings are good.
No cables in the way or pulling.
When the bike is on a stand so the wheel is in the air, it turns freely and a slight push will send it back or forth to the stop.
It gets very hard to turn during a long ride and the forks heat up.
I don't know what springs are in the forks nor on the rear shock.
