What year XR250 did you use and was it a bolt on affair? Also the rear looks different, did you do something to the rear shock, seems to have more travel?
Thanks, DK
It is a '91 XR200 with a '89 XR250 complete front end. You need to use the 250 clamps and bearings as well. They will fit perfect, including the steering stop araingment. The height you see thier closely mimicks the oem 200's. The only non oem part is a .125 washer (typicall 43mm fork spring preload washer)under the top clamp, on top of the bearing retainer. It was used to allow the stem nut on top of the clamp from bottoming on the threads of the stem. The oem 200 stem has the same o.d., but is slightly shorter than the 250. You cant just press the stems because the base size is different. Makes this bike a joy in the woods. These particular forks are set-up with Race-Tech emulators and .41 springs. Any front end from a 86-95 XR250 will work the same.
Beside the benifit of having larger fork tubes (41mm), and a disc brake, it also opens up the rider area. The XR250 clamp, places the handlebar mounts farther forward, about 3/4". Applied makes a billet clamp for the XR250 that comes with the Pro-Taper mounts, wich really makes for a strong combination.
ochster, is that the older model xr200r with taller suspension or has the rear end been modified to be taller. I'm wondering if it would work on a 1999 XR200R.
If you can't find an XR250 fork; a 1986 / 87 KDX200 front end will go on about the same way. The steering stop has to be trimmed though. If you go this route make sure you get all the bearings from the KDX. You can then mix and match to get the installation right.
If you can find the front end off an 84 XR 250, it will bolt right on. It's even the same length. In 84, both the 250 and 200 used the same chassis. Hope this helps
Rob; I'm thinking that you might be slightly wrong about the 200 and 250 sharing a chassis. Or maybe you meant similar.
Fredricksburg. Wow!! I gotta go there some day. Gotta see that wall!
I will be doing a new '02, in a couple of weeks. I'm near positive the front end is the same, it's the length of the shock I will need to deal with. I will give an update when done.
sounds good, so to complete this mod i would need to get the front end off of an XR250 that is basically any year, am i correct? when i say front end i mean forks, clamps, rim, would i need new plastics (light + mud guard)??????? and my Extreme racing bars would still fit??????
thanks
I know the 86'-95' XR250R frontends will work. I have alway's just used the oem 250 headlight shell, wich is held on by rubber straps. Both the 200 and 250 fender will fit, as they have the same bolt pattern.
thanks for all the help ochster, is the XR250's front rim any larger then the stock XR200 rim?? and how much trouble if any, is there in connecting the disc brake cable to the brake lever? is there any difference in the two cable, also will i need the cable off of the 250 or can i just bolt my other cable up to the disc's caliper?
hey its me again, just one more question about this mod, how much is it likely to cost, waht is say a 94-96 xr250 front end worth? i no im in australia but just tell me what it costs for you guys in the US.
thanks
i rode an xr200 for my first 8yrs, and had no problems whatsoever with the drums. in fact, i found them to give great feel. I can't understand why anyone would go through all that trouble. The xr is by far a superior trail-bike, but if you are looking for an out and out weapon, try am rm250 or something. I switched to the 2stroke monster and now when i get on my friends xr(i sold to HER), it feels like a laid back relaxer. i also searched and searched for suspension, brake and engine mods for the 200. The best mod by far: buy a bike that you haven't outgrown!!! :nener:
