I am new hear and just getting back into riding. Based on what I have read and what I plan to do, a KTM 200 sounds like the best choice. Can anybody tell me what the difference is between a 2000 exc200 and a 2002 exc200? Found a good price on a 2000 but can find any specs. Thanks for the info and I'm sure I will be asking more questions in the future.

The engine recieved minor updates-smaller carb. The big change was in the suspension-much better potential in the 02 stuff.

Actually the carb is the same size at it has always been. The changes between the 00 and 02 are(encompassing 01 changes also)

1. new lighter piston
2. longer gear shifter(01 change)
3. clear tank and different shrouds(01 change)
4. new bearings used in shift mechanism (02 change)
5. continuous upgrades in pds rear shock with new valving
6. new valving in front forks.

If i came across a mint 00 and the price was right I would buy it instead of the extra money for a new one. I have an 01 exc and the front forks are better on the 00 and 02.

For what it's worth I have a 2000 200 MX/C and love the bike. I put a Rad valve on mine and also just replaced the piston with a lighter Wiseco. (I didn't keep my filter clean enough and I had the replace the piston prematurely) With these two mods my engine may be close to a 02 engine. I hope this helps you with your decision.

98-99 came with the 39mm cab

mine is a 99 model and its a 39mm with marzo 45mm normal fork.

i have rode a 2000 model and it seems that the 39mm can pull further!!!

and the marzo fork works fine.

I have both a 2000 and a 2002 200EXC and there is not much difference in the motor department IMO. I think the suspension feels a little better on the 02 but not that big of a difference. I actually got my 02 a month ago but have kept racing the 00 because it felt just as strong as the 02 and is allowing me to dial in the 02 on practice days.

flyinryan is your '02 exc able to pull 6th fairly easily? Is there a big gap between 5th and 6th? I rode an MXC this past weekend and the gears were really short, I'm planning on an mxc and gearing it to 14 or 15:45, and I'm just wondering how the exc does, do you have to change the gearing?

The 00 200EXC comes with a 14/48 combination. I'm 99% sure that the 02 is the same. The bike will easily pull the 48 and in fact I have also run a 46 and 45 on the rear of mine. It pulls them all with no problems.

You cannot run a 15 on this bike AND run a case saver. No clearance. Plus you don't want to run without the case saver because if the chain comes off it can take out the hyd clutch housing. Not good, very expensive.

Hope this helps.

Yes the 02 pulls six ok, I don't notice a gap between fifth and six. I also run a 46 on the rear all the time. The 46 gives me some more top end and spaces the gears out a little bit. It does make a little gap between 2nd & 3rd IMO, but at race speed I don't notice it that much.

Layton you are correct, the 02 is still a 14/48.

Hope this helps.

i'm running 14/47 on my '00 exc right now. i've tried 45, 46 47 & 48. i think i like the 47 the best for tight woods & relatively short, steep hills. you'd probably want the 45 for the desert; the bike pulls it fine, but 6th is a bit of a gap with it (you just have to rev out 5th). i prefer the 47 b/c it puts 3d at just the right spot in the woods.

here's my gearing question: i need to split my cases & see why chunks of steel are coming out my drain plug. i'm thinking this can't be good, but the little dude started it right b/f the last enduro of our season & still finished, albeit the shifting was not quite what it should have been. my question: with the 47, esp. with the 48, 1st is mighty low. since i'll have my gearbox all apart anyway, is there any reason i can't install the mxc's taller 1st gear? opinions? ps don't panic jds, this bike has at least 18 hard races on it & lots of hard trail rides & has otherwise been stone reliable, this is i think just some fluke thing.

the big difference b/t the '00 & '01 (i've yet to ride an '02) is the suspension valving, especially in the fork. the stock '01 fork felt as good to me as my revalved '00. otherwisethe bike felt the same, altho the opaque gas tank is mighty handy.

jds22: I think just about ANY 200exc that's in good condition is worth buying. I've ridden half a dozen other 200s and they all performed well, the Gas Gas 200 was pretty cool too but not as adaptable. Have fun

this just in on switching to the mxc's 1st gear in the exc gearbox: fugheddaboudit. per mike kruger of cycle zone ktm in topeka, 1 of the gears is fixed to the mainshaft, requiring replacement of the mainshaft. so you'd need to buy a gear + the new mainshaft. that's too expensive for me for such a minor change. now you know!
