I a recent e-mail from Bigeasy I was asked to define what I meant by riding "cross-country" when I invited him to ride with us this Tuesday.. Here is his question:
" Could you define cross country, in miles, or hours, places of interest, etc. I will prolly ride over Tuesday to meet everyone at least, seeings as how it's such a long ride. HEHE."

and here is my response..

HI Rich.. Cross country - as defined by Woodsy's unorthodoxed dictionary - riding to where ever, going in what ever direction and kind of dependent on the wind, rain, FOOD of choice for the day. A TOTALLY undefined type of ride that allows the riders to let their hair down (if you have any) and just ride!! Street, two tracks, single track, power lines, open fields rocks what ever get in our way... IT IS A BLAST if you just wanna get out and ride and dont mind a total variety of ride type.. Not real fast, not real slow, yet sometimes kinda fast and sometimes slower then a snail.. You are more then welcome to come and ride for a couple hours and head back hoometo crash before work or stay the day hanging with us yahoos..
I know this isnt a very "defined" ride method but it truely is the best I can do.. I will post your question on DRN and see if someone (like Ted) can answer it better??
Hope to see you Sunday, Tuesday or whenever - SOON!!
Later Scott

I was wondering if any of you = Young Ted? YZAMN? may have a better defintion or do you think mine pretty much covers it?
Thanks
Woodsy

AHHH, been awhile since I had that kind a ride. Seems like I got pretty busy in the 20 somethin to 30 somethin stage , where life demands a pretty serious schedule. FORTUNATELY, things are slowing up a bit and a ride like that will do the soul some good. Will definately try to get some rest on Monday so I can travel a bit with you guys on Tuesday. This type of ride will grow, over the summer, as it seems many of us here are street legal. Wouldn't that be a sight, a dozen riders or so cruzin through town, covered head to toe in dirt!!! :aj:

Yea but you left out the geting lost part. The running out of gas part. The riding home in the dark by candle light/headlight part. The cold freazing in a thin riding jersey part.

Yep its a great time indeed

I knew I could count on you Don!!! :rotfl:
I tried to stay away from those finer detail points in my definition because I thought there is no since in scaring away a potential vic,,, I mean a fellow cross country rider before he has a chance to taste the squirrel, so to speak...

Like Morgan said, sounds like what we call Dual Sport rides.
Cross Country is a "no trail here" ride where you go from point a to point b making your own path. The DNR and Forest Service types get all cranky when we add a cross country section into one of Dual Sport routes.
But if it makes you happy to call it a CC ride, then more power to ya ;-)

Mr. 2trakr makes a very good point here.. Definitly - my mistake in varying from the D/S title!! It used to be that it really didnt matter what you called it (we just called it riding back in the day...) but it seems anymore, with all the greenie stuff, that it probably is important to stick to proper "terms".. Yes, we are going duel sporting and NOT going "cross country" in the sense of doing anything illegal!! Sorry about that guys!!!
And THANK YOu Morgan and Jeremy for catching that!!
