How do you set fork spring preload on a KYB.

I have a 2000 YZ 250 and was wondering how to set the fork spring preload. I have noticed that the microfiche of this bike has an option to purchase additonal washers to be added to the fork cap. There already is one there now and I guess you just buy as many as you need? Am I correct?

Thanks,
Tony

It's been a while since I've done KYB's, but I think you have to add the preload under the spring - not under the cap. If I recall, if you put the spacers under the cap, the inner tube will contact the spacers when the fork is fully bottomed. Result: a big mess!

Can anyone confirm my recollection??

I wonder if they should go at the same place on a bladder fork.

They can go on either end of the bladder fork but under the cap is best.

Thanks Shockdoc! It all makes sense. If I understand well, it is best to install it on top because the spring sits on a check plate that acts like a valve when it is extended quickly, or something like that.
