How equipped are YOU?

I am only writting this thread to (hopefully) make people aware of a peice of saftey equipemnt I was not aware of. Until it was to late.

After a wreak that broke my back last year (that put me down for 6 weeks, but could have been wose I guess) I was informed by a member of DRN about a peice of equipment, that could have prevented my bone breakage:confused: .

My sole purpose is to inform everyone that does not have one, (and I strongly urge this) to purchae one. I know they do not guarentee anything. But the added protection ontop (actually under)of a good chest protector, is well worth the money. And the nice thing about it is, they are olso avaliable for kids.I know there are other important peices of saftey gear, as well. And I am not trying to put this atop of the list. But at least put it on your list.

People always ask me "Why do you wear that under your CP? It looks so uncomfortable?" To me it's not. But then again, I broke my back. So mabey when I first got it and put it on, I wasn't worried about feel, and was more worried about protection. Who knows? But to me me, once I'm riding I don't know it's there.

So I strongly urge everyone on here (and relay this info to others you know) to look into it, for yourself, and for your children if you have any.

I know the risks that come with riding. And I accept those risks, just as everyone else on here. But I never thught I would break my back:) Mabey a arm, leg, or whatever:confused: But please check into it before it's to late for you. As it was for me.

This looks like it would be very protective, but from the picture it looks like it would be uncomfortable and difficult to ride in. Also, how much do they cost approx.? The way I ride, or crash, I really should get one.:confused:

WRAITH! Man, I wish I would have read about this about a month ago! I am definately going to purchase one. As I type right now I am sitting here in a back brace w/ 2 broken vertebrate in my back. I also preach that everyone should look into something of this sort!

Click the products icon. And when you get there. Scroll down, and where it lists Adults and Kids. Click either one of the 2, and it will take you to sizing and prices.

When you get it. You trim either the top or bottom Or both. I trimmed both. I don't think they have the one pictured trimmed. Because it doesn't look like a new product. Ya know what I mean;) After I trimmed mine. I just taped over the peices I cut to make it look clean. But no one sees it under the jersey. And no, it isn't uncomfortable. :D

I like the idea, and may buy one. One other thing I think it could do is have sort of a "backstop" for your helmet like some football linemen use. Maybe that could prevent serious neck injury from a head-first fall that pushes the head back? That's what got David Bailey I think, or maybe it was the roadracer guy, can't remember.

How much protection is enough? Break your back, and I will guarentee you will know for sure then. There is never too much protection. And no, you can't protect yourself from everything. But I bet this will protect mor than just having a CP on. Like they say, 2 is better than 1.

I will get one after I get my knee braces. Next on my list then is the back guard then neck guard and then elbow guards... It's to bad the knee braces cost so much...

I rode at Mill Creek MX with Lemming last week, and he was sportin' a new foam collar that attached to his chest protector. It was his first ride with it, and by the end of the day he was comfortable with it. I don't hve any details, but Lemming can fill you in.

I'm all for protective equipment..
and i have broken my back riding.
Mine was a compression fracture,no crash,just a very hard landing. So i guess i'm not sold on that device as it wouldn't help in a compression incident?

I'm sure in other types of breaks it would be very protective and you should wear anything /everything available >shrugs<

No it would not help with compression fractures. But my whole objective was to just let people know it was out there. Because I didn't know, and figured others might not know as well. And I'm almost sure if I had one on during that one crash. I might not have broken anything.

But anything that protects the spine (even if the protection is minimum) it should rank right up there with the helmet. As a need to get first item. That's just my 2cents.

What do you guys think are the main differences between the collar above and the EVS collar? I will also be getting a collar and now have to decide between the two.

It is somewhat flexible OG. To get to the point, I cut the bottom of mine right above my crack:uh: . It went down a little further than that (when new, not cut). And then I gradually cut (ever so little) more as needed, to keep as much protection on the lower part of my spine. But to where the protector would not grab the seat. I got mine to fit me where it protects all the way to the (top) fat of my butt. And this puts the protector (while sitting on the bike) just a hair higher than my seat. So this way, the protector is not sliding up and down if I'm on the seat. And it is best to do this (cutting, to get it to fit properly) however you are going to wear it. Like, if your going to wear it under a jersey and pants. Make sure you measure (before it's even cut) it while it's being worn under your gear. Because it will flex (slightly), depending on how tight you wear your pants. And this will make a difference, in fit.

I just got my back protector yesterday and here are my initial thoughts.

1. I doubt this thing would restrict movement in any way.
2. It is designed to protect your spine from impacts like part of a bike hitting you when you crash (I believe David Bailey did an endo and his seat hit him in the spine). Hitting rocks and what not. It will not protect from compression injuries at all.
3. It seems very simple in design whish is probably why it works.
4. As far a s price, if you looked at it as if you were also getting a kidney belt which is about $40 to start with, the back protection is only $40 more dollars, $79 total.
5. I doubt it will interfere with my chest protector in anyway. I will be wearing it over my jersey and under my chest protector.
6. I am looking forward to wearing it.

I wear mine under my jersey. But I do because I lost a little bit of weight and it makes my pants about the right size when I pull the pants over them:confused: . But that's just me. It works over or under the jersey. Glad to hear you got one:cool:
