How Much Difference between 01 and 06 CR250?

As someone mentioned the motor and frame are different between the 01 and 06. I had an 00 (same frame and pretty much same motor as 01) and loved it after I got my suspension fixed. I bought an 05 last year (same bike as 06) and it's better in every way than the 00. Lighter, turns better and the suspension is about perfect. The 00 may have had a tad more low end (right at the bottom), but the 05 blows it away on the mid-range and up. It's an incredibly fast engine. If you keep it singing, you'd better have it pointed in the right direction!

I hope that's not true. I don't know why everyone says the '01 is the best for the cr 250 (motor). I have had both the '01 and currently an '04, and it's hands down the better bike by far.

If the 06 is no faster than an 01,I have no desire to get a 250.The 01(low hour) I rode was no faster than my 92 and 94 CR's.

I think the 01 is over-rated. The 02, once jetted, is so close to the 00 and 01, it doesn't matter to me...and the 02 was supposed to be one of the worst of the 02-06.

my dealer also mentioned something to that effect but i was told that the rumor is that 07 will be the last model yr for honda 2 strokes.i have no way of verifying if its true but thats what i was told by serveral people i've talked to about it.i def hope its not the case.i would imagine if they do discontinue them they will at least continue to produce the 85,unless they have a 4 stroke in development for that class also

Also can someone answer me this, why in the hell has the 06 CRF model got 2 exhausts? Is this because it will be an increase in BHP?

according to honda, adding the extra exhaust can to the other side of the bike helps make it feel more balanced.i think it improved the power of the bike to but i am not totally sure.my buddy i bought my 125 from raced the 04 crf as soon as it came out but didn't get to use it for long since he broke his back and decided to sell everything.but after riding my 125 a few times since he's healed he's contemplating getting an 06 crf.it will be interesting to see how he compares it to the 04.well sorry for my bit of off topic rambling there,i tend to do that sometimes :blah:

I've had CR250's since 1997. All ported, with pipes, reeds, offset clamps and revalved suspension. In stock configuration jetted out, the '01 is without a doubt my favorite motor. Even with modified motors, my modified '01 was my favorite - it has power right off the bottom through the top - IMHO the best motocross engine I've ever ridden. My '05 ( identical to the '06 ) has descent bottom, great midrange and wicked top end - it can be a handful in technical stuff as it comes on hard - I do have a more docile cylinder setup, but it gives up a substantial amount of power up top. Suspension wise, my '04 had the best stock suspension - '05 was probably second best. I like the '05 handling the best, the 2mm offset on the forks helps on flat corners. If money is a concern at all, get the '01 and spend time getting it set up for YOU. You will be very happy.

Thanks for all the replies. I bought a 2001 model a few months ago and use it exclusively for off road riding (added FW weight, skid plates, brush guards) I am happy with the machine (except for the suspension which needs to be revalved for my use). I had a hard time adapting to the lack of low end power but my other ride is a 96CR5 with an Eric G. MoBetter port job! (if there's noise coming out of the pipe, its in the powerband...)

If the jetting has not been messed with, there is a lot of low end potential hiding in the needle circuit and pilot. If I recall, I used a stock needle, S-4 nozzle and # 30 pilot. My '01 had all kinds of low end - but the stock jetting sucked.

I got tired of playing with the Mikuni TMX and put a Keihin from a 2000 model CR on mine. Carburation is much better now.
