Obviously more than I have spent and I'm 37.

:think I'd guess several hours, several days a week.

How meny hours in the sadle do you get?

One of my bikes doesn't have a saddle so does it count?

I got a chance to talk to a couple of arenacross riders and they ride all week like it's their job, cause it is. So figure some pros put in as much time riding as some people do to pay the bills, pretty good life being paid to ride...

It takes 4 hours to get good.
Pros practice 24 hours a day.
I get an hour a week in the saddle.

Really, it all depends on the person. Normal guys like Patman or Me will never be good (no offense Patman)...but some guys just have natural skill.

Now the really scary part. My son is really good. I really think he has the dirtbike gene and can do very well. He is very smooth and adjusts instantly to changes in the bike as it bounces around under him. Sitting or standing it's just there. Yesterday I got my 2000 Montesa 315R out and said let's try a bike with a clutch. I explained to ease out the clutch and pull it in to stop all no problem. He hopped right on and away he went like it was old news. His only slip came when he stopped and had the front brake applied then dumped the clutch (Doh!) but, now he knows to KEEP the clutch in.:) The sad part is that he falls apart in front of a bunch of people much like Kevin Windham. A buddy was spying on him one day and said "Man he can ride!" as soon as he was seen though he fell apart :ugg:

Mind as far as how long it takes to get good and everything. It depends on the rider some guys have a natural talent and some have to work much harder than others. The only thing I can tell you is if you want to get good you need to rider a lot and work hard! I push myself every time I go riding, and it has helped me a lot I'm much better than I used to be. Just ride have fun and try to get better and you will.

The pros probably practice at least 4 times a week if not more. Probably more actually. I get as much riding time in as I can. During the summer I get like 6 hours a week in probably, but during rainy Washington winters I can only get about 6 to 10 hours in a month and I have to do it in 1 weekend.

So again just ride and push yourself and you will get better. Also watching Supercross and Motocross on TV and watching exactly what the pros do helps too. I do that and I watch what they do closely and it really does help. Don't expect to be able to be fast in 2 months it won't happen. Just go ride and have fun and be willing to learn.

I don't think it is a matter of how much you ride, rather, how much time you practice doing things correctly. You can ride 24x7 reinforcing your ability to do the wrong things and actually make your riding worse. The pros don't just go out and ride, they have people (coaches for lack of a better word) who watch their every move and critique them so that they reinforce the good techniques and eliminate the poor. Work on mastering individual skills and then put them all together later to refine the overall. Pastrana, for example, has Roger DeCoster coaching him, regardless of the kid's natural talent and ability. Work on doing things correctly, the rest will come;).

now the really scary part. my son is really good

why does that always happen? if i teach my friend how to ride, a little while later it it bites me on the butt and now i'm the slow one that sucks even though i taught that person everything i know (which isn't much). it started with skateboarding back in the day, carried on to bmx, and now has reached dirtbiking. i always get shown up, but it's still the best sport on earth!:)

You know what's important is having fun, not being the best rider out there. That's all I ever do it for, having the time of my life out there in the desert.

Fun is what its all about :) I don't wan't to be a pro just wan't to get good enough to have fun, I have to get my perspective and not go to glory hungry. I play a little hocky just (pick-up) and Im not bad but not pro level, maby cause I don't get enough practice.:mad:
