I already made up my mind to replace two of my family's helmets this winter. Now I believe I will make a closer inspection of the others, maybe I'll be buying more. BTW, HJC was going to be my choice. Own two of them now, and am impressed with the quality and price. Thanks.

I went with the theory of if it hits something, replace it. After an encounter with a tree at TNT I ordered a brand new lid......Replaced my HJC CLX-2 with their new CLX-4 and won't have any concerns about the safety of the helmet this weekend.

thanks for the link. ive been telling my parents about the reasoning that if the helmet its the ground or youve fallen with it you should replace it, and tehy said its all fluff. needless to say im not riding until i buy a new lid. my helmet has hit the ground numerous times and ive crashe several times and hit my head. the back and right side of the helmet is all dinged up and scratched. im printing out the article to let my parents read. maybe itll sway their decision!;)

I hade the same hjc helmet. it too saved my life or at least saved me from having a flat face and a fu@*ed up scull 4 the rest of my life. My helmet has saved me many times and eveytime ive been able to walk away becuse of my helmet (ive kissed my helmet like 15 times so far) well let me tell you pll about a kid who thought he was to "cool' for a helmet...... Me and my two freinds were gonna go bike yes a pedal bike! well anyways we were hualin ass down this hill (goin round 50 or so) and he decides to grab his goose neck so he can draft better.. well he took a corner and got speed wobbles soo bad his bers were spinning! well he goes off the side of the road and hits some concrete water diverters and the side of a cliff he rolled about 20 yards! well i can up on him and his eyes were all rolled back in his head and he was twithcing like he was dead (and i thought he was dead) so i got him awake and told me freind to keep him awake and talking and i ran down and had a old ladie call an ambulance. when i got back up to him their was a stream of blood 7ft goin down the road and a 6 inch gash in his head. well i didnt know the severity of his crash till 5 days later when he was out of the hospital. he has a broken collor bone, swelling in the head and a peice of his scull was missing, his ear was torn almost all the way off and he had to have a hole drilled in his scull to relive the presure in his head from his sweeling brain. all that coulda been avoided had he worn a helmet. so the piont of this story is to show no matter how small the ride a helmet is always a life saver. I also got a story about a freind who was killed becuse he didnt tighten down his helmet straps and the helmet came back and killed him, but thats too long to tell hope you all enjoyed this story and wear a helmet!!

I got a new helmet because of this and many other threads like this. I inspected my lid and was horrified to see that it had tons of hairline cracks in it!
So, I purchased a new lid. Thanks for convincing me to do something that could save my life!:)

wow, took out my helmet liner and there's a lot of damage done to my helmet. I can't recall ever hitting my head hard enough to dimple the foam though :think

Thanks everyone,

I have never had a crash hard enough to damage my helmet, but I think you all remember my story on Cobrakid and luckily his HJC helmet saved his life, even though he got 20 brain concussions and was in a coma for 2.5 weeks, he's able to tell about it and back in school.

So I appreciate all the input that you have put into this.

Special Thanks to Everyone

Hi All,
I'm the author of the How My HJC Helmet Saved My Life artice at www.mxintheus.com. I wanted to say thanks so much for taking the time to read that article and to examine your own helmets. As I sit here fighting off nausea and headaches while trying to recover from my concussion, your postings give me a great deal of comfort. I can't tell you how happy I am that you are all taking your helmets seriously. If my crash was able to save even one person from a nasty head injury than it was completely worth it. Thanks again for all of your support. You're part of the most wonderful community of people that exists. Thanks again and keep riding!
Sincerely,
Amy at www.mxintheus.com

Chalk up another fan of the HJC helmets after a 5th gear dismount in a desert race and a helicopter ride to the st joseph trama center in phx, fortunatly i was just left banged up and with no memory of the crash, although i did find helmet paint on my axle bolt in the back and gravel scratches inthe front. the helmet stayed intact, I WILL BUY ANOTHER HJC!

Should I get a new one?

I took a pretty hard hit about 2 months ago after crashing on a 40 foot double and it made me have to sit by my bike for about a minute, but when I check my helmet there was now cracks in the foam. Should I get a new one anyway?? My dad say I don't need one but I don't want to be in a hospital bed next week. My dad can be stubborn, but I hope he isn't to stubborn for my own good.:scream:

just because there is no visible damage doesnt mean the helmet is still safe, a hard hit might compress the foam without cracking it, and it will not have the same cushioning effect the next time you crash.

i was thinking though...couldnt you just replace the lining after a crash? it would be a lot cheaper than paying for a whole new helmet

Thanks

Wow, I just checked my helmet out and it is covered with cracks and indentations. I hit my head hard enough to get a concussion awhile back also.
