HS tool kit question

Ive seen threads on this before but cant remember all the info posted there. Im getting ready for my first HS. Putting a tool kit together, so far it has,
plyers
wire cutters
8, 10, 12mm wrenchs
screwdrivers

What else do you have in your kit?
What do you have for flats? tubes, (one or both sizes) or a fix a flat product like slime? Also, how do you reinflate the tire?

Or If you have a flat, do you call it quits and just ride back to the pits slowly?

on my first scramble last week i carried 8 and 12mm wrenches, 2 spark plugs, plug wrench, and ZIP TIES. i think if u have a flat u should just ride to the pits...hopefully that wont happen...in my race i didnt need any tools, knock on wood. but believe me, zip ties are REALLY REALLY helpful, u never know whats gonna fall off

You can buy little CO2 cartriges that you just stick on your valve stem and it will inflate your tire. Like mentioned above, zip ties always come in handy. There was a thread a while back about a guy who used a zip tie as his master link which had fallen off. He actualy rode with it for quite a distance if I remember correctly.

I may be a fool, but I don't carry a fanny pack when I race hare scrambles. I figure if I have any mechanical problems, I wouldn't be able to get it fixed fast enough to stay in contention. Fortunately, I have never had a mechanical failure take me out of a race. If I were contending for the points championship, I might carry tools just so I wouldn't get a DNF, but I just race when I can for fun of it in the "B" class. I am more likely to carry tools with me when I go out on a long trail ride and I am a little more concerned about getting stranded. I always carry a fully loaded tool box in my trailer.

i wouldnt wanna get stranded on one of the HS loops we have out here in the mountains...20 mile loop is a long way to push a bike

Like I said, my advice may not be the most sensible advice, but the laps around here are usually 5 - 8 miles and you are never very far from the truck.

Thanks for the tips. Ill start a list here of all things mentioned and update it ocationally. Im not looking to win a race, just not be stranded.

Except for the slime, you discribed everything in my pack., Our loops are min 32 mile - 40+ miles each.

Scott's multi tool has 8,10,12, phillips, straight
plug wrench and plug
6" visegrip w/ wire cutter replaces all the wrenchs (so buy new bolts if you butcher them!)
zip ties

If you are serious use bib mouse so no flats.

hey walt you can replace some stuff with a rider wrench from fredette.im goin over to his shop to get some goodies tomarrow(for the new bike,you know the secret one),if you want ill pick you up one.a leatherman is another handy thing to have.:D

I would not actually carry tire sealer just put in the tube before hand. Then all you have to do is air it up.
