There are a few "tricks" to starting the WR360 to prevent damaging the cases. I don't have a compression release and I have not de-compressed the engine by altering the base gasket. I have started my Husky in flip-flops just to prove the point. The problem is that the bike is a beast and the kickstarter is so far forward on the engine. You need to kick the lever backwards not down. It helps to get forward on the bike as far as your comfortable. One should also find the "sweet spot" before attempting starting. This is accomplished by moving the kickstarter to the point of greatest resistance. This is top center position. Return the kickstarter to the highest point and push it back and down positively and firmly. When I follow this procedure (it's the same drill used for firing big four strokes, back when they had to be kicked), my bike will start first kick every time. Jumping on the kickstarter with all your weight won't help start the bike and it's hard on parts.
