I finished the metal ramp!!

Hey everyone, I had posted a thread asking if anyone had plans for a metal FMX ramp, or something to that extent. I received a few replies to my post and I said that I would post pics and results when i was finished.

I just finished the ramp and I am stoked. It’s SOOO sweet. It’s adjustable from 4 to 6.5 feet, and 14 feet long. It took me a lot of time to make, so i thought i would post some pics to see what everyone else thought.

The pics are of like (I’m guessing) a 55-foot gap. It’s nothing big, but its the first time we ever hit it. Its only high 2nd on the 426, so I imagine if you wanted, you could go somewhere in the 75' range on the highest setting. Maybe farther with less slope. I am already planning on building another for a friend.

Honestly, when i built it, i thought it wasn't gonna work, and id have to go back to the drawing board, but its perfect.

Anyway, I’m gonna post pics of me (#5) and my buddy Brett (#9)

If anyone has any questions, or is interested in what i did
e-mail me

Plans?

Plans? who needs plans....................???

just kidding. i don't have plans, and i didn't use any. like i told someone else, i pulled this one outta my ass. (that'd hurt) i have been wondering if i could make some money at this. not saying im gonna break the bank, but at 17, being able to make my own hours, and make money in the MX industry, i think itd be pretty cool. i doubt it will happen, but if anyone thinks that i have a shot, let me know, i need a little positive renforcement.

As for the pics not showin up, my server is screwin me. i payed 18 bucks for a membership, and then they break................its nice to know my money is goin somewhere...........

Question

Drew, I have a safety question about your ramp. I see that it is adjustable, and that you have allowed for this (in the take off section) by letting it slide a little. My question is, what is keeping the top of the ramp from going forward when you hit it? I would expect to see some diagonal bracing on the sides of the ramp to keep it from collapsing. How did you account for this in your design? :think

Also, keep in mind that as you get more used to the ramp and your speeds go up, the force you induce into the ramp will be greater.

safety?

i know what your thinking. I thought about it too, but the reality is, that metal is strong. The bolts are rated up to 5,800 lbs, and the metal is much higher than that. The welds are about 45,000 lbs. so thats what i thought, plus a bike with rider wieghs what? 400 lbs, and even if you pull, 2 gs on the face thats only 1200 lbs. but thats WAY over how much pressure is on each one of those pivots. I feel that it is sturdy, and safe. As for the diagonal thing, thats a good idea but, i don't think its necessary, the weakest part of the ramp is probobly the 18 gauge plate on the face.

i just noticed that you wanted to know what was holding it from goin forward, at the base of the ramp, where the ram hits the ground, and you start goin up, there is a pivot. the pivot is attached to the base, so that all the force goes down not foreward.

Any more questions let me know

Drew

Well, I don't think the calculations work exactly that way, but I'd keep an eye on those welds. If I find out more info I'll get back to you.

Honda - That's one of the coolest things I've seen in a while. Do you know roughly how much it weighs (how many people to move it)? How long did it take to build, and how much $ in materials?

Dude thats awesome!

Ive got a question for ya. I want to build a ramp when I get a new bike, so I have a bit of time to think and plan. But the question is... How do you know how far away to make the landing??

Jlsx- the thing probobly wieghs in the relm of like 300-400, 4 people can move it, but the more the better. i haven't got all the prices yet, but i estamted somewhere in the 180- 250 range. pretty cheap.

CanadianRidr- go for it, if you wanna come to cali and hit it, your more than welcome to:D . just one question, how much do you weigh, and what bike are you on. I don't want some goon that wieghs 800 lbs riding a FJ1200, goin off it:scream: ............jk

Trackmaster- good question........i have no idea. i wasn't the first one to hit it. i have never even hit it on the low setting........(yeah i know im bad.....:debil: ) its kind of like a normal jump, you just hit it. anyway, i suck ass at explaining this so im gonna stop trying.....

keep posting stuff, even if you do think that it sucks. (mike T).......im kidding. its just that negative stuff is good too

Yo, your misrepresenting me! I am a concerned DRN citizen looking out for the safety of a fello DRN'r. If I thought your ramp sucked, I would have told you :) . I'd actually like to try it (on the low setting) on a short diatance, if I could get my nerve up  .

Actually, thats just the way I look at things. My real job is to make sure things, buildings, don't fall down and no one gets hurt. I am to lookout for the safety and well being of others. Even though I don't "know" you and am 3000 miles away, I still consider it my job to point out things when they may have questionable design. Looks like your ramp has held up pretty well so far. I just want to make sure.

BTW, I have found some formulas, and I think I'll see what the numbers come out to be. :)

i know you were lookin out for me and i appreciate it. i wasn't serious about the whole "you think my ramp sucks" thing, i was just sayin that negative feedback is a good thing. You actually pointed things out to me, and i re-welded some of the braces because i DO NOT want it to break.

sorry if there was any bashing.....i didn't mean it like that
