hey. my son has a 2002 cr80r. he rides off road with me.
i am wondering if there is any way to get more low end power for him. if you have any ideas, just post!
I am not sure your ever going to get this bike to have a ton of low end...however, we made a pipe spacer for the one I have been working on. I used some 1/8" aluminum cut exactly to the shape of the exhaust manifold. It had the effect of making the pipe 1/8" longer overall. The mod appeared to help low end and throttle response.
Before I bought a pipe or anything silly like that I would call Eric and let him port it for more low to mid.
We have tried a few different pipes on the bike. The kid likes the looks, but his exact words were..."It did not do much, it looks cool though!"
With the larger sprocket you'll gain more down low and lose on top. You will notice the difference going up two teeth. Material is up to you, aluminum is lighter, typically doesn't last as long as steel. You shouldn't change out one sprocket at a time.. you need to change both as well as get a new chain (keep the same number of teeth on the front sprocket). They all need to wear the same way at the same rate. An old chain will cause the sproket to wear a lot faster than it should.
I have some torque reeds I can sell ya. E-mail me at Snowsk5054@msn.com.
They were for my YZ 80, but I didnt use them, havent even come out of the package. I researched the reeds and they will fit on your CR. E-mail me....
You'll never get very much low end out of a CR80. However, some of the things I did to mine that helped are reeds (Boysen), Torque Spacer (Moose), and FMF Fatty expansion chamber, and an FMF Q silencer.
Lowering the gearing will not change the power characteristics of the engine at all, but it will help you keep the engine running in the range where it makes the best power.
