there should be timing marks on the stater and the case
how many are there?
line them up
and use lock tight and tighten the screws
if you can adjust the timing by the plate-oval holes it should still start no matter where it is
i ran my kx fully advanced and fully retarded and it started bolth ways
good luck

I have a 96 YZ 250 and am having a similar problem....won't start. There are no timing marks on the stator for the 96-98 models. At least that is what my Clymer manual says and I've not seen them either. I was just working on it today. There are marks for matching up the stator plate to the flywheel.

I also wonder if there is a way to determine TDC without a indicator? I also wonder how often CDI units go bad?????

Just put anything in the spark plug hole that will reach the piston, and rotate the engine. When the piston stops going up, it's at TDC.

You will need a timing gage to set spark timing in degrees though.
