Burning oil has different colors, not a warning sign. White is usually steam, that along with a sweet odor point to a coolant leak. About the only safe method of determining a seal leak is a leak down test. Or, just change the seal. Personally, a lot of blueish smoke, change the float valve.

£28 for the float valve

I'm defenately holding on to splitting with the money for that..
What problems do you get with a worn one, is it rich because its not sealing correctly fire to it being worn?

Correct. Without a microscope, its hard to see. Its a yearly replaced item, depending on use and abuse. When you start having jetting issues that do not make good sense, that valve could have issues! Taking the bowl off, and seeing the fuel shut off, does not mean its okay either. The excess fuel runs into the engine. I have seen it fill the engine, and pipe! Or it can just dribble here and there. One of many things to seem like bad jetting for sure.
