Ocotillo as bigschafft put it, is a great camping and riding place. My family and friends have been going out there for the last 6-8 years. There are alot of things to do. Lots of places to ride to also. We usually go as a large group, which are 2-3 day trips. Get there either on a Thurs night or Fri and leave Sunday early afternoon. We go on a long ride in the morning with the kids. Then after lunch the adults and big kids that want go ride head out for a faster ride. My 15 yr daughter has fell in love with our TTr-125. She has a quad, but just ends up riding the yammy more than her sofa.
The kind of riding you'll find out there is a mixture of sand, hard pack and hills. Remember that this is the desert. So the availablity of shade is few and far between. It's a must to have a camelback. Not only for water, but also for your munchies and other items you'll need. Zip ties, tools, money. I think you get the picture. There are a couple of store/restaurants we ride to, to grab a cold drink while out riding. Ocotillo is about an hour closer to you than Glamis. You mentioned something about you living in Santa ana. Where abouts? What's the closest freeway interchange to you? I hope this answered your questions. If you have anymore I will be glad to answer them. On a closing note. Kennedy meadows that everyone has mentioned. Is one of the most beautiful places to ride. I have been once and plan to get back there again. This time as a much better rider.
