I'm thinking about getting an '05 KX250F

I currently have an 03 YZ125. I have blown around eight engines in the past two years. The first six or so were do to a faulty crank since new. The last two have been because of US Chrome. First cylinder, clearances were too tight; second, clearances were too loose, piston ring caught the exhaust port. I don't want to hear anything about me not maintaining my bike or not knowing how to work on it, lack of maintenance had nothing to do with my blown engines. Oh yeah, I had an 01 YZ125 before this and the transmission started to crap out after 2 month of use. (Funny thing is that while my bike was in the shop this summer, my old yamaha was in there too because it melted the plastic on the crank.) I now hate Yamahas

Anyways I also have a 2002 YZ250F, I like the power of the four stroke, but I like how light the 125s are. I was thinking about getting a KX250F for next season, what are people's opinions of the bike?

I haven't heard if they've worked any of the bugs out of the the RM/KX for 05. I'd wait and see.

Get a 04-05 YZ250 and jet it right...eight engines in two years? I would do all the work myself after that....or get it running correctly. Jeff.

Never heard of anyone blowing that many up in so little time .... not even BusterWho.
Just a guess, but I'd suggest anything you had would have suffered the same end... it's not a Yamaha thing.

I know how to take care of my stuff, it had a defective crank from the factory. I put the motor together, had 2 different mechanics work on it and it still blew up :bang:

You used a defective crank 6 times!? Then the other two US Steel did you wrong...hmmm, maybe you ought to think about something less prone to whiskey throttlin'.

Seriously, the KXF is no ride and forget about it machine (like a XR400), your mechanics need to be up to snuff for this one

I'm also one of several riders in the area that have had us chrome cylinders go bad, they even admitted they screwed up on my cylinder.

This forum sucks. Something is wrong with my bike and everyone assumes its my fault. I don't know why I even asked about the bike, I haven't got any good answers yet, just chewed out by a bunch of D riders who probably couldn't jump a double.

R u gonna cry mabye if u didn't use defective stuff over and over again it wouldn't have happend sooo many times. how well do you know your mechanic? mabye you should shop around more befor you let people work on your bike.

The guy who worked on my bike is wrenching for a pro rider this season, I don't know the riders name, but he's an ex-factory rider.

You might be a fine mechanic, but you are definitely hard on bikes. That's fine, I'm no stranger to blown motors either. But think of all the riding time you lost last season with a broken bike. If you were on a reliable bike (maybe even a slower one), you would be a faster, more competitive rider today. Knowing your history and the history of the KXF, the two of you don't sound like a good match. If you were a D rider who couldn't connect doubles, then the KXF might not ever break.

This might be a good time to drop your brand preferences, and just get the most reliable 250F available. Might I suggest a red one?

Pick yourself up the November Issue of Dirt Rider ( I think its november) It has a review of the 05 KX250f. From what I heard in it, all things we're fixed except the suspension isn't too good and they said if you mess around with the suspension a bit you should be able to get a rideable.

Honda's are good bikes....I've heard that the KXF has made improvements in reliability in 05' but really only time will tell if they succeeded.

Personally, I think that if you are a rider that is hard on bikes you are going to have more problems with a 4 stroke and much greater expense should you have any major engine failure.

If you go with the 4 stroke I would say go with the Honda.

It doesn't look like they've fixed the problem for '05 either, so if it were my money I'd go with something else. If you really are keeping up on maintenance and still are blowing cranks on your Yamaha, you probably will run a similar fate on any of the small 4's, so maybe you should stick with a 125. Or you could drop the 125 for an 80 and hang out with people of your maturity level.

Just when I think I could go to a 4 stroker after reading the review on the KXF in Dirt Bike magazine... another nightmare shows up. I doubt I will ever go to a 4 stroker. I will just rebuild the KDX every 2 years if it needs it or not! :laugh:

Prices are ridiculous too...
