I tried to register my KDX for the road at the local New York DMV, but got denied. They said it could only be registered as an ATV. I heard & read about Vermont giving road plates for dirt bikes. But some type of limitation, only 300cc or bigger. Anyone got any info on it.

New York used to have provision for street registration for dirt bikes by adding the street equipment to pass inspection. This ended 12/00. The next option was a Vermont registration. They would street register your bike with an out of state address no questions asked. This has now ended. You must now submit a letter from your home state DMV verifying that the VIN is a legitimate street bike and the reason you need to register it in Vermont on the official DMV letterhead.

What's up, Norman...

Did Vermont just recently start with the new requirement you mentioned? Registered my KDX220 through the mail there without a problem last August as I also did my KDX200 two years earlier.

How do you go about registering a dual sport bike in New York exactly? How would you obtain a title, just file for a lost one? I may be getting a 94 DR350, which i am assuming is in street legal condition.

Maybe try to have it titled as a "reconstructed "title, (if it were a car and in a wreck and taken to the junk yard, you buy it, fix it get a reconstructed title, in Pa. the state police inspect it to make sure it street worthy). Or, you may be able to get a modified title, (if it were a van and you made it handicap assesible, you get it modied).
I was told this when I looked @ to do mine.
Go to a custom bike shop and ask them or ask a few body shops. I find like AAA has no clue on what to do.
It's more than likely gonna involve time and paper work.
Find a scoot with a clean title.

I cant find that site now....... It had info on registering snowmobiles and ATVS with it, but i didnt save it.......I think it was in pdf format, had ot use Acrobat reader. Baja Designs make a street legal kit for 95+ KDXs for about $400. I found a '94 KDX for $1200, but i need a dual sport kit. I think all oyu need is a horn, brake lightm head light, a few reflectors, and turn signals.

Go to your local New York State DMV. Tell them that you bought a MOTORCYCLE and lost the paperwork and that you would like to register your MOTORCYCLE and pay the appropriate sales tax. Have a motorcycle policy insurance card, that was issued no longer than 45 days ago, a legible frame rubbing, and a hand written receipt from the previous owner. Along with the following forms COMPLETELY filled out:

Certification or Sale or Transfer for 1972 or older vehicles OR any other non-titled vehicles

Statement of Ownership

Registration Form

http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/mv821.pdf

Sales Tax Form

Be VERY polite, have all of your paperwork in order and already filled out (if the form is 2 pages, print it out double sided!), and take cash. You may want to fill out a set of practice forms. Make sure that all of your writing is neat and legible and in pen. Make sure that all of your dates match (forms and receipt). Whenever a form asks for body type or type of vehicle, be sure to write "MOTORCYCLE" only. Always refer to the vehicle as a "MOTORCYCLE" only, never as an ATV or Dirt Bike.

If this is a new bike (purchased in NY State) or it is currently registured as an ATV or you're an idiot and cannot follow detailed instructions and be very polite to DMV personel ... forget about even trying this.

No guarantees.

Well stated! I did the same here in Pa. to get my title. I just kept saying it was a MOTORCYCLE, and how odd it was that the cert. of orgin said enduro machine. What is an enduro machine anyway, must be what the company calls a dual sport MOTORCYCLE???? YUK, YUK, YUK! Made small talk, listen intently while the lady told me about her kids and got my title!
