Initial Inspection

I just bought an '83 Yamaha IT 175. The PO said that he hasn't really ridden it in a while and the last time that it was even started was last fall. I need to know what parts/pieces I should inspect before I try to kick it over, and before I ride it. I plan to do a compression check, but beyond that I don't know how far I should go. Is it worth it to tear the entire thing down? Help me o wise ones!

Well, for a 21 year old bike, this is what I'd do for starters...

1) Change the oil. I like Mobil 1 15-50 synthetic (red cap).
2) Clean the air filter.
3) Disassemble and clean the carburetor with carb cleaner. Probably some gummy, varnished spots that need to be cleaned.
4) Drain and flush the gas tank. Put in fresh gas.
5) Ensure you have the correct spark plug, and that the gap is set correctly. I'd put a new one in. Make sure you have spark.
6) Ensure that the throttle tube and cable assembly is well lubed.
7) Start it up!
8) Take a little ride in the snow for a big grin!

Well, I was going to work on some other projects tonight, but I can't pick up lumber with the 12" of snow that I have in the pickup bed (and no broom). I'll give it a shot and tell you what happens.
