try this for breakfast
find 2 positive numbers such that their sum equals 4 times their difference and their product equals 9 times their ratio.(be sure to show your work)

9 and 15

work will be shown in a second :)

Dope nevermind, it doesn't work.

Anyway right or wrong, heres what I did:

1st take those sentences and turn them into formulas.
Let X and Y be our magic numbers.

X + Y = 4 (X - Y)

X * Y = 9 (X / Y)

Start with the top, and distribute the 4 through.

X + Y = 4X - 4Y

Now rearrange so all X's are on 1 side.
X + 5Y = 4X ...... 5Y = 3X

Now plug that relation into the 2nd equation.

(3/5)X * X = 9 * ( ((3/5)X * X) / Y )

Multiply both sides by Y and remove the 3/5

X * X * Y = 9 * X * X

Remove the X squared.

Y = 9

Plug that back into the top and solve for X.

Gomer looked at my paper!

X*Y = 9*X/Y
Y = 9/Y
Y**2=9
Y = 3

And

X + Y = 4*(X - Y)
X + Y + 4*X - 4*Y
Y + 4*Y = 4*X - X
5*Y = 3*X
X = 5/3*Y
X = 5/3*3
X = 5

Ans is 3 and 5

Good job
X+Y=4(X-Y)
X x Y = 9 x X/Y
X=5 Y=3
Ta Da
OK now how bout this
What day would tomarrow be if yesterday were 5 days before the the day after Sunday's tomarrow? :bang:

yes it's Saturday. :)
If you took a piece of paper .001" thick and folded(doubled) it 50 times,how thick would it be?

If I was your math teacher I would give you partial credit. You were right on track, but screwed up here.

You were supposed to substitute for Y, which means there wouldn't have been any Y left in the equation. Instead you threw an extra Y into the numerator.

The proper substitution is:

(3/5) X * X = 9* (X/ (3/5)x)

This will give you a result of 5 and 3 for the two numbers

Doesn't Monday come after Sunday?
Monday-5=Wednesday=Yesterday
Yesterday+2=Tomorrow=Friday.
Coincidentally, today is Thursday.

Everybody knows that you can't fold a piece of paper more than 7 times, unless you have a really big sheet of very thin paper and a steamroller. Then you can get to 12. If you could though, it be be 2^50 which is a very large number indeed. 1.1259E+12 sounds good.
