There was a KDX 80, a KE 80, a KX 80, and a KD 80 that I can remember. Look at the serial number on the engine, it will tell you what the model is.

My son started his racing on a 86 KX80 3 years ago and it was fast. The seat was about 1 inch lower than the 2000 YZ80 he replaced it with. There were some tradeoffs in technology with a bike that old but he was very competitive with it and had a couple top 5 finishes (out of at least 20 riders) with it. I still see it raced by the new owner and with proper maintanace it just keeps going

In '86 Kawasaki made a KX80, KDX80, KD80 and in '87 They added a KD80X that had a huge tank and small wheels.....I had an 85 KDX80 and it was a great bike, air cooled 2-stroke with decent suspension(about the same as 82-83 motocross 80's/ Uni-Trak). If it is a kdx 80 it may be difficult to find parts for. I would look for a KX just because of parts availability.....$00.02

How tall is it compared to the brand-new 80's?
Well, it's a different animal than the new KX 80s. My neighbor has a KDX 80 and I think it is a 85 or 86. I don't know the exact seat height but looks a little bigger than a new XR80.

When did the kdx line start?

I believe the first KDX was in 1979 (400 or 450). Before that though were the KX and KD bikes. There were also KEs, KTs, KSs and more.

The KX came out in 1974 with the KX 250 and the KD came out in 1975 with the KD 125.
