Is this required to split a case?

I own a '92 cr 250 and need to split the case. I have almost everything apart except the shift drum. I removed the shaft but the drum is still inside the case. Do I need to remove this to split the case or not? The manual says so but on Eric Gorrs site it says you can leave the shift mechanism on. Thanks.

You do not have to remove the shift drum or the shift "star" or pawls. If you remove the 10mm bolts and remove the plate that holds everything in place the spring loaded shift palws will pop out. This tend to be a problem with the do it yourselfers. They usually mess something up putting it back together. It would be best for you if you leave it all intact. If you've already taken it apart and need help with reassembly call me.
