Metzger's back flip performance today left me speechless. AMAZING. The man started out by being in the opening scene of Crusty Demons of Dirt and has progressed to this - arguably the best FMX rider on earth. Certainly the most outstanding performance of any FMX or XGames contest ever.

I remember a few years ago when forum moderators would not allow discussions on freestyle mx. Ha! Now it is the most watched XGames event and Metzgers back-to-back back flips in todays event will generate WAY more press coverage than anything RC or MC have done or will ever do.

Remember when MX folks were afraid that FMX would make the sport look bad? I think high ticket prices and lack of competition in MX may worry FMX riders even more. Oh no! What if someone sees MX and thinks that FMX might be as boring.

Its so ironic that members of this forum are critical of the skill and danger involved in FMX. There is no doubt that FMX requires more skill and less conditioning than SX. FMX is probably statistically more dangerous than SX. Just remember that FMX guys ride for the same reason we all do. Fun, thrill, acceptable risk level, adrenaline rush, etc.

So the next time you are roosting a trail on the XR100, remember that we all have one thing in common. We all love dirt bikes.

I think you are confusing "balls" with skill. FMX is ok to watch when theres nothing else to watch, but there is no way it requires more skill than SX or MX in my opinion.

fmx is kinda boring, i mean all you do is jump, and well everyone does the same tricks, it gets boring fast. but with sx you got 20 people flying around a track and if the 3rd-4th place battle is boring, you just look at someone else. you need a lot more skill to race mx or sx, because there are a lot more factors in play, you have corners, whoops, doubles, tripples, ruts, berms, and the worst of them all, lapped riders. just another opinion.

This is goin to turn bad quick. Two entirely different "sports" with entirely different "skills". A "sport" that is Judged isn’t a sport... it's a pageant. Ms. Universe, FMX, same difference. :p I don't think the FX guys should be allowed to use "MX" in the title. It's cool... but MX it's not. Motorized BMX? Yup.

ok all, line up for a "knuckle crackin'" from sister marry rotten crash. look people, poser aint right, mx vs freestyle, but that don't mean he aint happy with fmx. i heard freestyle compared to MX like the half time show compared to the football game. i'm not totally shure about that, but it's done on dirt bikes. we all love dirt bikes, maybe if poser didn't directly compare apples and oranges it wouldn't be so hard to swallow, but don't rip him. mx and fmx are both the same, guys taking dirtbikes and doing wild stuff to have fun. ok, all be nice now. it's us (dirt bike fans) against them.

Poser, it might be popular but FMX might as well stand for Fantasy MotoCross because it takes mostly "balls" to do it well. Actually it might for all the attention I have paid it.
What really bugs me is this move towards "extreme" sports. How long will it be before Gen XYZ become bored with these "extreme" sports and move on to more extreme levels of enjoyment. What is left?
Also, the first time one of those flyers whacks himself in front of a stadium full of people and dies the press will have a field day.

These "sports" fall under the same catagory as mainstream professional sports -- pablum for the masses.

Besides, Travis P has to be the best of the freestylers, hands down.
And why? Becasue he's a good kid with superior talents that can show them in whatever birtbike venue he chooses. The tattooed clowns have nothing on that young man. Heck, Travis has thrased each of them in just about every event he's ever entered...AND with a 125! :)
I'm sorry to let you down like this poser, but most fmx'ers are failed moto riders.

I don't buy the "it's done on dirt bikes so it's the same" reasoning. Do you REALLY want to be associated with Capt. Robbie Knevil? Yeah well he's A LOT more closely related to FMX than he is MX or SX! Enjoy your new associate :p

FMX came in dead last, watched a couple of guys take their turn but it's the same tricks over and over. It was more interesting to watch golf! That's right, GOLF!

Let me first address a few things...

Let me revise my statement about skill. More or less is not my point. Its a different skill and it doens't really matter. Anyone can ride a MX track. One third of those can ride a SX track correctly. Not necessarily fast, but they can make it around the track. Very very few people can can ride FMX. Some may be able to get the nerve to do the jumps. Doing a trick is a different story. Where am I giong with that, I don't know.

Oh, ouch... Robbie Kneival. That was a low blow.

Beauty pageant? Nice one. The trend is moving away from racing and towards more creative events like freestyle. Wake up.

And as usual, posts on this board can be edited or removed. Remember that you are only seeing what your moderators want you to see.

Seriously, its all a matter of personal preference. Fortunately the television lineup isn't based on one persons opinion. XGames will have more viewers than SX or MX. Period.

Ever been to the X Games? Usually held in the middle of a big city and the tickets are FREE. Thats right, $20 less than a SX. XGames FMX winners get more money than SX winners. The facillity are top notch. And the television audience is larger than SX or MX. And its FREE!

I was wondering how long it would take before the conversation regressed back to the "they are bad MX riders" bit. Its like the old school conservative MX, SX guys are bitter that someone else is getting the spotlight.

People go to a race and wait all night for a crash or the nac-nac on the last lap of the main event. At a freestyle show you get to see it all without watching guys chase each other around the dirt in between the action.

Talk about BORING. Almost every MX race this year has been a yawner. SX is barely more exciting. Why? The JUMPS! Spectators like to see jumps. FMX gives some people exactly what they are looking for.

There is a lot of technical skill and endurance required for MX and SX. No one is doubting that. And yes, Pastrana is good at everything he does. Whether he is good at FMX because he is good at MX or vice versa, it doesn't matter. He is plain good.

ANYWAY, enough time spent here. Hats off to Metzger.

If you do a little research you will find out that more people go to SX and MX events than to FMX events.

The viewership on tv is higher for the X-games as a whole than it is for SX or MX only b/c you have the skateboarders, bmx and other particpants fans watching as well. If you factor only FMX events versus a MX or SX than either MX or SX by itself has more viewers than FMX. Also, the LV SX PPV had more purchasers than the Gravity Games did.

I agree with Poser on one thing, which is the fact that MX and SX takes more conditioning than FMX.
I was gonna say the same thing that Truespode said but he said it first. How many people were at FMX during the x-games, 2,000??, it was held in philly, a huge city, of course theres gonna be alot of people there. At Unadilla there were like 20,000 people there(some insane big number), and thats in the middle of no where really. I traveled 5 hours to watch the race there. I doubt alot of people traveled very far to see the FMX. Most just figured they'd catch on tv.
As for saying hats off to metzger and he's forever, while saying RC is ok too. There is no way he's forever, a few other riders can also do backflips. Theres someone that did it during practicing and what about Pastrana doing 2 into the grand canyon(?) and then parachuting down. RC is not only a truly awesome rider, but a much better role model.

i forgot were i saw the article but it said that mx/sx was getting all time high ratings on regular tv. yes abc's wide world of sports was getting all time high ratings from sx. it was in 2nd place in the ratings, the only sport above it during the weekend was nascar. im sure someone esle has seen this article, if i find it ill post it.

Also i think fmx gives motorcycleing a bad name. You mostly hear of people getting hurt while doing freestyle. Today while watching the xgames they were braging about the injuries and said that they were riding with broken bones over and over. And well when the kids go up to their parents there going to think that riding a dirtbike is a lot more dangerous because they hear of all the posers hurting themselves while trying to do tricks.

IMO i think fmx is boring and takes no skill. id rather watch 20 people on a track battling for the win, than 1 person going over 2 or 3 jumps, and then the next person goes out and does the same thing. i wouldnt go to an fmx event even if the tickets were free, its boring, id rather watch golf or tennis.
