Maybe you saw the news reports and thought who?
John Deacon was the best British competitor in the Paris Dakar Rally to date posting a sixth place finish and stage win last year. He had taken part in the event many times as a privateer and factory supported KTM and BMW rider despite him ironically owning a KTM dealership in the south west of England.
John had won the British Enduro Championship 10 times during the 90's but he also took part in the longer 'rallye' type events throughout the world.
Sadly on Wednesday, whilst competing in the Master Rallye 2001 in Syria, John is thought to have crashed at high speed, colliding with rocks and suffering fatal head injuries.
John was close friends and an ex-team mate of Paul 'Fast Eddy' Edmondson who competes in the GNCC in the States.

Spare a kind thought for his wife and two young children.

Rest in peace......
John Deacon
